Imaginative play gives Summerbridge’s Early Years Unit its character. Creative play opportunities are always available, and the nursery aims to help children become independent through their relationships with adults and other children. This is provision for children aged 2 to 4, based at Summerbridge Primary School and serving the Darley and Summerbridge Primary School Federation.
The emphasis is on children’s happiness and wellbeing, alongside curiosity and growing confidence. For families, that means an approach which places children’s personal development alongside their first steps in learning.
Play is the starting point. The unit uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and aims to cover its 7 learning areas, building on what children have already learnt. In practical parent language, its stated approach brings learning into play and direct experiences, with children encouraged to express ideas, thoughts and feelings as they participate.
Across the federation’s early years provision, activities chosen by children sit alongside focused teaching in number, writing, reading and phonics. That combination gives children scope to follow an interest while also spending time on the foundations of literacy and mathematics. It is a balance of exploration and adult direction.
Indoor and outdoor experiences form part of the unit’s intended learning environment. The wider Summerbridge school site includes gardens, grassed space and a rear playground; inside the school are a central hall and library. These are features of the school setting, rather than a description of a separate nursery playroom.
Happiness and wellbeing guide the unit’s aims. It seeks to provide inclusive childcare and to develop partnerships with parents, making the relationship between home and nursery part of its approach to children’s care.
School lunch choices include food brought from home, cooked meals and sandwiches supplied by school. Cooking takes place on site at Summerbridge. Families preparing a packed lunch should include a suitable non-fizzy drink and observe the school’s restriction on products containing nuts, peanuts or sesame seeds.
SEND support has a federation structure: the school’s special educational needs coordinator works across both schools and is based at Summerbridge. This gives families a school-based contact for concerns about additional needs. Meetings with staff can be arranged through the office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through North Yorkshire’s online admissions route and meet the deadline set for the relevant admissions year. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The unit is based at Summerbridge Primary School on Main Street, Summerbridge, Harrogate, HG3 4JN. Nursery enquiries go through the school on 01423 780446; the school office can also be reached at summerbridge@ycatschools.co.uk.
For journeys to school, parents are encouraged to park farther away and finish on foot. Drivers parking nearby are asked to consider neighbours, lower radio volume and switch off engines. Information can be requested in another language, Braille, audio or large print, giving families alternative ways to access school communications.
