Nursery at Western Primary School

Home visits before the first session and outdoor learning beyond the school grounds give Western’s nursery its character. On Cold Bath Road in Harrogate, the school runs its own FS1 nursery, with provision for two-year-olds and a nursery group for children aged two and three. It sits within the school’s Foundation Stage.
Play gives children room to concentrate and pursue their interests. In March 2024, Ofsted found that children across the early years were enthusiastic learners who stayed focused during play, with activities planned around their development. That finding concerns the school’s early years collectively, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Books also connect learning at home with conversation at school. One activity encouraged children who were less keen on reading to enjoy a favourite book in an unexpected place, photograph it and discuss the picture afterwards. The point is practical: a familiar story becomes something a child can talk about and share.
Outdoor learning starts in the early years. Space on site is limited, so local places extend the possibilities. Valley Gardens is used frequently across the early years to support learning, while the school also draws on RHS Garden at Harlow Carr for its outdoor education. Walking to these spaces brings road safety and physical activity into the experience.
Settling begins before a child takes up their place. Nursery staff visit FS1 children at home, and children can take part in a stay-and-play session beforehand. These give families contact with the team and children an introduction to nursery before their regular attendance begins.
For children needing additional support, the school aims to identify needs early and involve parents throughout. Its Learning Support Team can provide individual help, activities using movement and several senses, and support with speech and communication. A child’s needs determine the support, rather than a single approach for everyone.
Parents of children on the SEND Support record are invited to termly meetings to review their provision. The Family Support Worker also helps families with concerns about behaviour, wellbeing and changes at home; contact is through the school office. This gives parents a route for discussing pressures beyond learning alone.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route.
For entry in September 2027, applications are coordinated by North Yorkshire Council. The application window opens on 12 October 2026, and the deadline is 15 January 2027. Keep that application alongside nursery planning: taking up an FS1 place does not replace it.
The nursery day starts at 8.45am and ends at 2.45pm. A booked, paid additional half hour extends collection to 3.15pm. The earlier collection uses the east-side gates opposite Heywood Road; the later collection uses the main gates. Families arranging a different person to collect must inform the teacher or office beforehand.
The Hive provides before- and after-school care for school and nursery children, with activities including crafts, gardening and games. Nursery also closes on staff training days, including 23 October and 27 November 2026, so those dates matter for childcare planning.
Government-funded hours run over 38 weeks, with funding beginning in the term after the relevant age is reached. Consumables may attract additional charges. Contact the school for current charges.
