Thirty nursery places within a primary school, with dedicated outdoor learning space: Little Gems brings the youngest children into Brookmans Park Primary School’s early years provision. Children must be three when they join. The nursery sits within the school on Bradmore Way in Brookmans Park, rather than operating as a separate setting.
Learning combines adult teaching with opportunities for children to try things themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers communication, physical development and relationships alongside early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Development Matters guides planning. In parent terms, the approach means teaching a skill, then giving children opportunities to use it independently through play and exploration.
Children’s ideas help shape topics, which staff develop into learning activities. Building Learning Power also applies from nursery onwards: the school aims to develop habits such as persistence, reflection and working with others. These aims sit alongside practical opportunities to explore, make choices and attempt something unfamiliar.
The foundation stage classrooms have dedicated outdoor spaces, allowing learning to extend beyond the classroom. The wider school grounds include an all-weather play area, trim trails and shaded gazebos. Nursery activities in 2022-2023 included playing on the pirate ship and watching frogspawn develop into tadpoles and frogs before releasing them into the school pond. Those examples connect physical play with close observation of living things.
In November 2023, Ofsted found that children’s independent activity in early years drew on the words and skills modelled by adults. Reading and storytelling helped children expand their vocabulary. The practical benefit is a link between listening, learning new words and using what they have learned for themselves.
Support extends beyond the nursery team. The school’s Inclusion Team comprises three special educational needs coordinators, whose work includes arranging outside-agency support, advising colleagues and checking progress. The team aims to identify needs early and provide targeted help suited to the child. Parents can contact it through the school office or at senco@brookmanspark.herts.sch.uk.
A specialist Mental Health Lead supports pupils’ emotional and social needs. For families with younger children, the school also signposts ERIC for potty-training advice, First Steps Nutrition for healthy-eating guidance and NHS speech and language resources. These give parents practical support routes alongside conversations with staff.
Separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process, using Hertfordshire County Council’s route and meeting the deadline for their child’s intake.
For entry in September 2026, the application window ran from 3 November 2025 to 15 January 2026. Those dates belong to that past admissions cycle.
Learning continuity is a separate matter. A yearly overview supports the development of skills from nursery into Reception, giving staff a framework for what children learn next. That curriculum link should not be mistaken for an admissions entitlement.
Extended nursery hours are offered, giving families an option beyond the core nursery provision. Contact the school for current charges.
Prospective families can arrange a nursery viewing through the school. The office is the enquiry route: call 01707 652355 or email admin@brookmanspark.herts.sch.uk. A viewing gives families an opportunity to see the provision before deciding whether it suits their child.
