Purposeful play, books and conversation shape Little Stars at Coupals Primary Academy. This school nursery in Haverhill caters for children aged 3–4, with a maximum of 26 full-time equivalent places. Children can join from the term after their third birthday. Its character is a mixture of activities chosen by children and teaching directed by adults, rather than a day built entirely around one approach.
Term-time attendance comes in 15-hour or 30-hour patterns. That makes the weekly arrangement a practical part of choosing Little Stars: families need to consider the allocated block of sessions alongside the nursery’s approach to learning.
Registration starts at 8:45am, lunchtime runs from 11:45am to 1:00pm, and the main day ends at 2:45pm. Morning and afternoon sessions meet at 11:45am, so lunch falls within the afternoon session. An optional paid extension takes attendance through to 3:15pm.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the learning framework. In parent language, it brings together learning to communicate, move and manage feelings, alongside early literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding the world. Play and exploration are ways of learning within that framework.
At Little Stars, children have both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities. Adults combine planned play with direct teaching, while children also pursue activities of their own choosing. Books and conversations receive explicit emphasis, giving language development a place in everyday activity. The nursery aims to adapt learning around each child’s interests and needs, and staff model the learning behaviours they want children to develop.
Settling begins with stay and play visits. Parents initially remain with their children, followed by sessions in which children stay independently. This gives separation a staged introduction. During pre-start visits, families complete an All About Me form, helping staff learn about the child while parents become familiar with nursery routines.
Arbor is used to collect children’s details and emergency contacts after a place is accepted. For children who may need additional support, the school’s SEND coordinator works with parents before they join to identify their needs. This creates a route for discussing support before the first nursery session, rather than waiting until attendance begins.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Coupals Primary Academy and does not confer admission priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Treat that application as a separate task, even if your child is already settled at Little Stars.
Preparation for the next stage is a different matter. New Reception starters have a summer session for parents and carers to meet the class teacher and SEND coordinator, followed by stay and play sessions later in the summer term. These opportunities help families become familiar with the next classroom arrangements; they do not change how places are allocated.
Little Stars operates Monday to Friday during term time, excluding staff development days and bank holidays. The 30-hour arrangement covers morning and afternoon sessions across all five weekdays. A 15-hour place follows one of two blocks: Monday and Tuesday plus Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon plus Thursday and Friday. Preferences are discussed subject to availability. This is a booking pattern families should check against their working week.
Golden Ticket funding and 30-hour childcare funding are accepted, alongside paid places. Parents requesting a 30-hour place need a Childcare Choices code and must renew it every three months. Additional paid sessions are possible; contact the school for current charges. The optional 2:45pm–3:15pm extension requires booking and non-refundable payment half a term ahead.
To arrange a visit, email littlestars@coupalsacademy.co.uk or call 01440 763933. Nursery application forms are requested through admin@coupalsacademy.co.uk and returned to the school office. Withdrawal requires written notice of half a term. Late collection incurs a charge, so collection arrangements need to match the booked finish time.

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am and afternoon sessions from 11:45am to 2:45pm. An optional paid extension runs until 3:15pm.
