Nursery at Westfield Primary Academy

Duckling Class gives Westfield’s youngest children their own place within the primary academy. The nursery accepts children from the term following their third birthday until they start school, with capacity for 26 children. On Chalkstone Way in Haverhill, it combines nursery sessions with the support structures of the wider school.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 May 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play, conversation and activity shape the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Children explore indoors and outside, with learning organised around seven connected areas. Language, physical skills and social and emotional development provide the starting points. Reading and writing, maths, understanding the world and creative expression build on those foundations. For parents, this means learning extends beyond early letters and numbers to relationships, movement and managing feelings.
Westfield places reading and vocabulary across its early years curriculum and aims to develop independence through children learning together. In May 2022, adults helped early years children develop reading skills in manageable stages. Maths included shapes and number facts, giving children concrete foundations for later learning.
Familiar routines matter too. In May 2022, early years children understood the school’s routines and treated other children and adults respectfully across differences in background and culture. These are useful foundations for taking part in a group and becoming comfortable with the expectations of a school setting.
Children who stay through lunchtime bring a packed lunch from home. Lunch supervision carries an additional charge, so families combining morning and afternoon sessions need to plan for both the food and the cover.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), Westfield uses an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle. Staff discuss concerns with parents before referring them to the SEND coordinator. Individual Pupil Plans record three or four targets and are reviewed in October, February and June, giving families regular points to discuss support and next steps. Parents can use Class Dojo to request a conversation with the class teacher.
A designated safeguarding lead works alongside alternate leads. Families can raise a concern through the school office by telephone or email, providing a direct route to the safeguarding team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. It also gives no admission priority under the 2026-27 arrangements. Families must make a separate application through Suffolk County Council’s normal admissions process. For September 2026 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2026.
Transition support is a separate matter. A summer information session introduces families to staff, followed by Stay and Play sessions later that term. Some children with SEND receive extra opportunities to become familiar with the setting; a reduced timetable at the start may also be used for some children.
The June 2024 nursery arrangements give morning sessions as 8:45–11:45 and afternoon sessions as 12:15–15:15, with lunch cover between 11:45 and 12:15. Morning sessions run Monday to Friday. Duckling Class families receive their session timings directly.
Funded attendance is accepted for up to 30 hours a week from the term after a child turns three. Funding can be divided between providers, and additional sessions can be purchased. Paid extras are payable ahead of each half term; withdrawing from an additional place requires half a term’s notice. Requested sessions depend on availability, which matters when matching attendance to work or other childcare.
