Nursery at Charville Academy

At a Glance

Pencil grip and story time give Charville Academy’s nursery its clearest character: small steps towards writing alongside listening to a story together. The nursery belongs to the primary academy on Bury Avenue in Hayes, placing these early experiences within a school setting.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 11 and 12 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.

The Nursery Day

Writing begins with the physical skills needed to hold and control a pencil. I Am A Clever Writer starts in Nursery, where children receive help with their grip and fine motor skills. For parents, the useful distinction is that this work begins with controlling the tool, rather than simply expecting children to produce written words.

Story time provides another concrete picture of learning. In May 2023, nursery children listened calmly and attentively while their teacher read aloud. This was a specific observed activity, showing children taking part in a shared listening experience.

Nursery activities also extend into school events. In December 2025, morning, afternoon and 30-hour children were included in arrangements for Christmas singing in the Lower Hall. A nursery sports day was scheduled for June 2026. These dated examples add singing and a sporting occasion to the picture of nursery life, rather than establishing a daily timetable.

Care and Support

Support for additional needs begins with assessment, including children in Nursery. Across the school, extra help can involve individual work, small groups or adapted resources. Parents contribute to planning with staff, with the SEND coordinator involved in agreeing targets. This gives families a role in deciding what support should address.

Personal Education Plans and My Support Plans organise that work through a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review. Advice from outside professionals can become part of the support programme. The school has spaces for small-group work and individual learning areas, allowing support to take different forms according to a child’s needs.

For an initial concern, the class teacher is the first contact. A discussion with the SEND coordinator may follow. The practical benefit is a clear starting point for parents who want to discuss their child’s development.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate task when planning the next stage.

For children with SEND, support when changing year groups can include resources to use at home, visits to the new classroom and extra visits where needed. Staff also share relevant information. These arrangements address familiarity and continuity of support; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Arbor handles school communications. Parents should switch on notifications and check their junk folder for messages so that school contact reaches them.

The school office can be contacted at office@charvilleacademy.org or on 020 8845 1707. For concerns about additional needs, begin with the class teacher so the discussion can connect directly with your child’s learning and support.
