Where the Colne Valley's reservoirs and wet meadows mark Greater London's westernmost edge, Hillingdon is the second largest of the 32 London boroughs by area, running from Hayes and Heathrow Airport in the south to open country in the north. Formed in 1965 from the former districts of Uxbridge, Ruislip-Northwood, Hayes and Harlington, and Yiewsley and West Drayton, the borough today serves a population of around 311,000.
Ruislip and Northwood define the school-competitive north. Families in both areas compete keenly for primary and secondary places, and Northwood in particular is sought-after for its catchments along the Metroland corridor. Ickenham, West Drayton, and South Ruislip complete the spread of family-focused residential neighbourhoods across the borough. The Metropolitan line at Ruislip Gardens connects to Baker Street in under forty minutes, while the Piccadilly line links Uxbridge and the Heathrow terminals into central London.
