Nursery at Pinkwell Primary School

Play, conversation and nursery bikes give Pinkwell’s youngest children a starting point of their own. This is the nursery at Pinkwell Primary School on Pinkwell Lane in Hayes, with applications accepted once children reach 3 years and 3 months. The standard place provides a three-hour session on five days each week during term time; a limited number of full-time places serve children eligible for 30 hours of free childcare.
In April 2022, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Conversation is a deliberate curriculum focus. Adult-led learning puts emphasis on vocabulary and communication, while children spend most of their time exploring and playing with considerable freedom to choose. Adults join that play, introduce words repeatedly and extend children’s ideas. The balance gives children room to pursue an interest while keeping an adult involved in developing it.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines language, movement and personal development with early literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. Pinkwell uses Development Matters to guide progression. During exploration, staff use ShREC: Shared Attention, Respond, Expand, Conversation. In practical terms, adults attend to what interests a child, respond and keep the conversation going.
Small-group work and individual learning tasks sit alongside observation during play. Staff use those observations to shape subsequent activities around children’s interests and learning needs. Bikes purchased for the nursery add a concrete opportunity for movement. In April 2022, early-years children also practised counting and revisited numbers up to 10, while learning dinosaurs encouraged them to keep trying. These are foundations built through repetition and participation.
Extra support is built into the early-years curriculum so children can take part in learning. Adult interaction during play and individual or small-group tasks provide opportunities to respond to each child. At school level, the support structure includes a SENDCO, a family support worker and deputy safeguarding leads, giving families distinct roles to approach for inclusion and welfare concerns.
Health learning has a practical dimension: in April 2022, early-years children understood the importance of toothbrushing. For families using school meals, Dolce is the provider and School Grid handles orders, which must be placed before 8:30am each day. Vegetarian and halal choices are offered; allergies should be reported to the main office. These school meal arrangements make dietary communication a specific parent action.
Attending Pinkwell’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was Thursday 15 January 2026. That deadline belongs to a past admissions cycle.
Preparation for the next stage is a learning question as well as an admissions question. Pinkwell aims to develop confident communicators, with adults extending vocabulary through play and conversation. Those everyday skills support the move towards school learning; they do not secure admission.
Nursery applications go directly to Pinkwell Primary School using its application pack. The part-time model provides three hours a day, five days a week, during term time.
Full-time funding. Places for children eligible for 30 hours of free childcare are limited. Families need an eligibility code from the government’s childcare portal and must apply before their child’s starting term to secure that term’s funding.
