At a Glance

Pretend shopping gives early maths a practical purpose at Wood End Park Academy’s nursery: children can use what they learn through play. Communication and early reading sit alongside this playful work with numbers, giving the provision a clear focus on language and everyday experiences.

Based at Judge Heath Lane in Hayes, the nursery belongs to the academy’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision. Its approach starts with each child’s existing development and interests. The nursery aims to work closely with families from the outset, so learning at home and nursery follows a consistent approach.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum recognises that children develop at different speeds. Here, staff establish an individual starting point and build learning around interests and experiences drawn from everyday life. For parents, that means the starting point is their own child’s development rather than an assumption that everyone is ready for the same work.

Letters and Sounds: Phase 1 supports communication and the beginnings of reading. Nursery phonics takes place through activities and small groups, with teaching adjusted to children’s progress and attainment. Maths is interactive too: pretend shopping provides a familiar situation in which children can try out their developing skills.

Books have a physical place in the learning environment. Classroom book corners give children access to fiction as well as non-fiction, while staff share poems, stories and information books with them. This connects early reading with vocabulary and understanding, rather than treating it solely as work on sounds.

Learning uses outdoor spaces as well as indoor ones. Role play also forms part of the early years provision, allowing everyday experiences to become material for play and conversation. The nursery’s emphasis on children’s interests gives these experiences a purpose within its individual approach to learning.

Care and Support

Teachers work alongside support staff and nursery nurses in the early years team. The academy aims for children to form close relationships with familiar adults and develop communication through exchanges with both adults and other children. That places relationships alongside learning in its early years vision.

Parent workshops provide opportunities for families to participate in their child’s learning. The nursery also aims to establish a partnership with parents from the beginning, connecting what staff understand about a child with what families know at home.

In July 2023, Ofsted found that support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including in early years, helped them learn successfully. Additional resources and adaptations enabled access to classroom learning; staff received training and strategies suited to individual needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their entry year. The application route is Hillingdon’s online schools service at www.hillingdon.gov.uk/schools. Treat this as a separate decision when planning your child’s next step.
