Nursery at Brighton College Prep Handcross

Mud kitchens, chickens and swimming give this nursery a character that extends well beyond its classrooms. Little Owls welcomes children aged 2-3 years; Wise Owls is for rising 4s. Both sit within Brighton College Prep Handcross’s pre-prep department, in the walled Secret Garden. It is a school nursery with its own outdoor spaces and access to larger school facilities.
During December 2025, the nursery comprised two classes. The December 2025 ISI inspection found that early years spaces and resources helped children become more independent and develop their creativity, relationships and physical abilities.
Cooking and gardening sit alongside music-making, imaginative play and the beginnings of reading and writing. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and practical development together across seven areas, with children’s interests shaping activities. In December 2025, morning storytelling developed listening, while decorating butterflies with stickers exercised fingers and hands. Small tasks have a clear purpose.
Afternoons add specialist teaching: Spanish, Forest School and dance feature alongside Sporty Tots and movement and mindfulness. Phonics begins in Nursery, and early maths uses games and practical activities. Children also explore instruments and sounds. These experiences give them several ways to participate, from talking and listening to moving and making.
Each class has outdoor space directly connected to its classroom. Vegetable beds, chickens and mud kitchens make growing things and exploring materials part of the learning environment. Woodland walks and nature trails extend those possibilities across the school grounds. Weekly swimming takes place in a heated pool; the sports hall, astro and pitches are also used by nursery children.
Forest School adds a woodland setting with bug hotels, a mud kitchen and opportunities for den-building. A dedicated Forest School teacher plans the sessions. Outdoor exploration therefore has a place alongside classroom learning, rather than being confined to playtime.
Before children begin Little Owls, families are invited to Mini Owls Toddler Group. Meeting staff and exploring the nursery together offers an introduction to the people and spaces children will encounter. Nursery applicants also attend a Taster Session, with its length depending on their age.
In December 2025, early years staff used regulation rainbow to help children understand feelings and support one another. Adults and peer buddies guided behaviour, while children practised sharing resources and taking turns in the role-play area. Appropriate early years staffing ratios and paediatric first aid training supported supervision and care.
Lunch can be included in a nursery session. Across the school, a catering team prepares freshly cooked dishes to meet individual needs, supported by a dedicated nutritionist.
Site safeguarding. In December 2025, some agreements for non-employees living on site lacked signatures. This was corrected during the inspection, with a recommendation to keep those agreements in place. Families should weigh that procedural concern alongside the early years care findings.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm the Reception admission arrangements with the admissions team before making plans. An application itself does not guarantee admission. Familiarity with the school should therefore be kept separate from securing the next place.
Full-day and half-day sessions can be taken with or without lunch. Nursery wraparound care runs from 7.45am to 6pm for 50 weeks of the year, giving families a longer care window around their chosen session. Contact the school for current charges.
