Nursery at Booker Hill Primary School & Nursery

Home visits and a gradual start give Booker Hill’s nursery a clear introduction to school life. Its nursery class is for children aged three and four, within the primary school on Field Road in High Wycombe. Morning, afternoon and full-day options let families choose between a shorter session and a day spanning both sessions.
The staffing structure includes nursery teaching staff and nursery key workers, alongside an Early Years Phase Leader and an EYFS SENDCo. That gives early education its own leadership and support roles within the larger school.
Play and growing independence are central to the early-years experience. At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children in the early-years classes learned to take turns and handle resources for themselves, supported by relationships with caring adults and routines established promptly. Those everyday habits matter: children practise sharing a space while becoming less dependent on adult help.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning, development, health and safety. Its seven areas connect language and physical development with social skills, literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. Booker Hill’s 2025–2026 curriculum provider list names Primary Knowledge Curriculum for EYFS.
Nursery plans give that framework concrete activities. Children join materials to build wheeled vehicle models, shape dinosaurs from clay or playdough, and make animal homes with blocks and small-world resources. These tasks combine making things with exploring how they work. The nursery computing plan includes sequences, patterns and solving problems; physical education focuses on developing both small and large movements throughout the year.
Settling begins before the first session. Nursery staff visit the child at home, then introduce children gradually over the first two weeks of term. Individual settling arrangements can be made where needed. Families therefore have a chance to introduce their child’s habits and needs before the classroom routine begins.
Lunch can be brought from home or chosen as a hot meal. A separate lunch club bridges the morning and afternoon sessions, making the midday arrangement a practical part of planning a full day.
For additional needs, the school has both a SENDCo and an EYFS SENDCo, with enquiries directed to SEND@bookerhillschool.co.uk. The school’s accessibility provision includes a single-storey, level site, external ramps and an accessible toilet. These are useful physical features for families considering mobility needs. Safeguarding concerns should go immediately to the safeguarding team through the school office.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place at Booker Hill. Buckinghamshire Council handles Reception admission separately, and parents must make a fresh application through the local authority’s online process. Plan for that application by the normal deadline even while your child attends nursery. The nursery place and the Reception application are separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. The full-day option runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm, with lunch club between 11:45am and 12:15pm. Session preferences depend on availability, so an alternative may be offered when the preferred session is oversubscribed.
The 2026–2027 nursery policy provides 15 funded hours from the term after a child turns three, usually across five sessions subject to availability. Eligible working parents seeking 30 funded hours must obtain an HMRC verification code and give it to the school. Lunch club and hot meals carry separate charges; the consumables contribution is voluntary. Ask the school for current charges. Payments use ParentPay.
Nursery clothing is practical: black jogging bottoms or shorts, with a red, green, blue or yellow t-shirt or sweatshirt. The logo is optional. Apply using the nursery form and email nurseryadmissions@bookerhillschool.co.uk, or submit it at the office. School visits can be arranged through the office on 01494 521646.
