At a Glance

Children’s questions can change the direction of learning at Crown House’s pre-school. Activities combine adult guidance with children’s own choices, indoors and outside. That gives curiosity a practical role in the nursery day.

For three- and four-year-olds, this is the nursery provision within Crown House School at Bassetsbury Manor, High Wycombe. The October 2023 ISI inspection identified one nursery class, known as pre-school, within the early years department. Its early years findings described good progress and children who felt settled and secure.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives the learning its framework. In parent language, that means building communication, movement and relationships alongside early reading, number work, creative expression and understanding the world. Learning is broader than preparation for formal lessons.

Planning follows children’s interests as well as their developmental needs. In October 2023, staff used starting-point assessments, agreed individual targets and watched children’s responses closely enough to change a topic when a new interest emerged. Adult-guided activities sit alongside play children initiate themselves, giving them opportunities both to practise particular skills and pursue their own ideas.

A dedicated outdoor space belongs to the Early Years unit. One pre-school example from October 2023 captures its purpose: children investigated a worm inside a fallen apple and explained why the fruit should not be eaten. Exploration becomes a chance to reason and talk. Helping return outdoor equipment also gives younger children a useful responsibility.

French, drama, PE and music feature through specialist teaching. Creative materials include paint, clay and sequins, while science week and DT day add themed experiences. These give children different ways to explore ideas through movement, language and making.

Care and Support

Settling begins with a stay-and-play visit alongside a parent. A short independent session follows, potentially around an hour, and can be repeated according to the child’s needs. Separation happens in stages.

In October 2023, early years staff helped children handle feelings sensitively and modelled the behaviour they wanted to see. Bonus bears rewarded positive behaviour among the youngest children. Staff also worked with learning support colleagues and parents when a child might have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), agreeing action together rather than leaving concerns within the classroom. Regular supervision meetings supported staff development; qualified paediatric first aiders attended to early years medical needs, and the early years safeguarding requirements were met.

Parents can contribute home observations through Magic Moments and access their child’s learning journey through the teacher. Weekly newsletters and home challenges provide further links between nursery learning and family life.

Lunch is included with afternoon and full-day sessions, but excluded from mornings. The catering team prepares hot meals, changes menus weekly and provides vegetarian alternatives, with substitutions for allergies or intolerances. For children staying to eat, dietary needs can therefore be accommodated within the meal provision.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the admissions team what you need to do to arrange Reception entry.

Crown House describes most of its pre-school pupils continuing into its Reception class. That describes what families commonly choose; it should not be treated as an entitlement to admission. Discuss Reception entry separately from the decision about nursery sessions and funding.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.30am to noon; afternoons run from noon to 3.30pm. A full day spans 8.30am to 3.30pm. The stated minimum is four sessions per week, although the fees table also includes a three-morning pattern. Confirm the applicable booking pattern before committing.

Breakfast Club runs from 7.45am to 8.25am, and AfterSchool Care from 4pm to 5.30pm, with tea included in the latter. Both are charged extras. Families using these extensions should agree the arrangements around the end of their nursery session.

Funding and extras. Crown House operates during term time, for 34.6 weeks per academic year. Its funding arrangements therefore do not use the full annual entitlement here. Consumables carry an additional charge and cover items including specialist teaching, materials, snacks and meals. Very limited funded-hours-only Standalone places are allocated in request order: the 15-hour option spans five sessions and the 30-hour option nine. Families must meet the age eligibility conditions. Ask the school for current charges and funded arrangements for 2026/27.

Use the pre-school enquiry form or book a personal tour, with the option to bring your child. The office can also be reached on 01494 529927 or at office@crownhouseschool.co.uk.
