Curiosity, resilience and learning through activity characterised Oakridge School’s early years provision in Ofsted’s March 2022 findings. Its nursery belongs to the primary school on Oakridge Road in High Wycombe. The report described purposeful learning indoors and outside, with an emphasis on how children approached learning as well as what they learned.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 2 and 3 March 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
In March 2022, Ofsted described the Oakridge curriculum as giving early learning a deliberate structure. Activities were carefully prepared to engage children and develop their curiosity and resilience. This meant taking part, exploring and persevering were learning goals in their own right. Children were developing habits to draw on when a task became difficult or something sparked their interest.
Indoor and outdoor learning environments both supported this activity. The emphasis was on purposeful engagement across the two spaces, giving children opportunities to learn beyond a single indoor setting. The environment and the planned activities worked together: the spaces supported children’s participation, rather than simply providing somewhere to spend the session.
Learning alongside other children also mattered. In March 2022, children shared equipment, waited for their turns and worked cooperatively. Adults taught respectful behaviour and manners during activities. These everyday exchanges gave children practice in managing shared resources and taking account of someone else’s needs, alongside their own learning.
Adult support was closely connected to children’s understanding. In March 2022, early years staff recognised misunderstandings and responded through caring exchanges with a clear learning purpose. This matters when a child needs help making sense of an activity: support can address the particular difficulty rather than simply encourage them to carry on.
The same adult involvement extended to social learning. Respect and manners were taught as children took part, making guidance part of ordinary activity. Behaviour across early years was exemplary in March 2022. For families, the combination of cooperation between children and responsive adult help is a useful picture of the provision’s care and learning working together.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Oakridge School. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are distinct decisions.
The early learning described above has value in its own right. Developing curiosity, perseverance and the ability to cooperate helps children participate in learning; those experiences should be considered separately from the allocation of a school place.
The nursery’s school address is Oakridge Road, High Wycombe, HP11 2PN. Oakridge School can be contacted on 01494520341. For families planning journeys and school contact, these provide the practical starting point alongside the separate decision about applying for Reception.
