At a Glance

Language and learning to handle feelings give this nursery its clearest character. In February 2026, adults’ conversations with children supported vocabulary development and helped nursery children express themselves and manage their emotions. Those are useful foundations for joining in, explaining a problem and building relationships.

St Michael’s nursery belongs to the Catholic school’s High Wycombe campus on Daws Hill Lane. It has 30 places and admits children from the term following their third birthday, with entry points in summer, autumn and spring. The February 2026 Ofsted judgement for the school’s early years was Strong standard. This covers the early years provision within the school.

The Nursery Day

Teaching starts with what children already understand. In February 2026, early years staff tracked learning closely and adjusted the content and timing of teaching to children’s starting points and gaps in understanding. For a parent, the practical strength is teaching that responds to the child rather than expecting everyone to begin in the same place.

The early years foundation stage brings together language development and the beginnings of reading, writing and mathematics here. Staff had substantial training and expertise in teaching these areas, and adapted learning to meet differing needs. Adult interaction mattered across the curriculum: conversation helped children build the words they needed to communicate their ideas and feelings. Support also addressed barriers for children learning English as an additional language. The February 2026 findings described strong progress across early years.

Care and Support

Relationships with families were a strength of early years provision in February 2026. Staff maintained close connections with parents and carers, providing a basis for sharing an understanding of each child’s learning and needs.

For children needing additional support, the school uses an assess, plan, do and review cycle. Parents contribute to decisions about adjustments and interventions, and are invited to termly reviews of SEND provision. Support can therefore be reconsidered as a child’s needs change. Families considering a place for a child with additional needs can arrange an initial visit through the school office to discuss support with the SENDCo.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no nursery-attendance priority under the 2026–2027 arrangements. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, naming St Michael’s. For September 2026 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2026; a paper Supplementary Admission Form was also required by that date. That application cycle is past.

Preparation for the move is separate from allocation of places. The transition programme for children with SEND brings nursery staff, the Foundation Leader and SENDCo together with parents to share information. It includes an induction morning for prospective children and their families, plus infant playground use and assemblies six weeks before transfer. Familiarity can help children prepare for the change; it does not create an admission entitlement.

Practical Information

Morning-only and all-day attendance are the main booking patterns, with places offered preferentially to children attending Monday to Friday. Selected-day attendance may be offered when places are available, subject to review each term. That condition matters for families seeking fewer days.

The nursery offers 15-hour funded places, 30-hour funded places and fee-paying places. All children qualify for 15 funded hours from the term after their third birthday; eligibility conditions apply to 30-hour funding. Families ineligible for that entitlement can pay to add sessions. Nursery applications go directly to the school. General enquiries can be made through office@stmichaelscs.org or 01494 535196. Allocated disabled parking bays at the nursery are available to parents holding a disabled parking badge.
