Animal shapes for measuring and a pretend café for learning about money: creative play gives the early years its character here. In February 2024, children developed their understanding through activities shaped around their interests, with adults helping them explain ideas and explore feelings. Learning had a practical purpose.
The early years formed part of the pre-prep and prep provision known as Wycombe Preparatory School within The Chalfonts Independent Grammar School in High Wycombe. The school's age range began at three. ISI's inspection of 20 to 22 February 2024 found that planned activities and imaginative play helped early-years children progress well.
Play connects language, early mathematics and social development. In February 2024, children explored these skills through creative tasks that let their interests influence the learning. Adults planned around what individual children needed, rather than treating an activity as an end in itself. For parents, that means looking beyond the finished picture or model to the conversation and understanding developed along the way.
Cutting animal shapes, for example, gave children a reason to investigate measurement and size. Adults prompted them to talk about their actions and use their imagination, helping build communication and knowledge of the world. The pretend café introduced money through buying refreshments in role play. These were concrete ways to make unfamiliar concepts approachable.
Learning spaces had plentiful resources, and adult-led play sustained children's engagement. Sharing those resources also became part of the learning: adults helped children practise waiting and taking turns. Social skills were developed through everyday activity.
Emotional support accompanied the learning. In February 2024, adults helped children communicate feelings and handle ordinary challenges. Guidance around sharing was sensitive, giving children help with the small frustrations that come with playing alongside others.
Parents received detailed accounts of development against early learning goals, together with suggested next steps. This made progress more understandable and gave families a part in supporting it. Early years also had its own safeguarding lead, with the school's safeguarding arrangements extending to this provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm Reception application requirements and any deadline with the school. Treat the admissions decision separately from familiarity with school life.
In February 2024, prep pupils supported early-years children with reading. That contact brought younger children into the wider school community; it should not be read as an admissions advantage.

Charges. Contact admissions for current charges. The school requires a term's notice when withdrawing a child outside the normal leaving point; otherwise, a full term's charges apply. Families should factor that commitment into their decision before accepting a place.
