Play, conversation and children making their own choices give Wooburn Green’s Pre-School its character. This is the nursery provision within Wooburn Green Primary School, with a Pre-School teaching role and learning support assistants working across the early years. Children’s interests help shape the learning, alongside activities directed by adults.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 4 and 5 May 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework, with Development Matters guiding the curriculum. In parent terms, learning starts with talking, moving and getting along with other people. It also takes in early reading and writing, number work, creative expression and discovering how the world works. These areas connect through play rather than becoming a succession of separate subjects.
Children have time to pursue their own ideas, alongside small groups led by adults. Choices, listening and learning with other children are part of the approach. Exploring materials or discussing an idea gives children ways to practise communication while becoming more independent.
Indoor learning extends into an outdoor environment. Children can experiment with sand and water, make models, paint, explore music and take part in imaginative play; climbing and riding bring physical activity into the mix. Forest School is also timetabled so that children across early years have an opportunity to experience it each year. Outdoor learning therefore has a place alongside classroom activity.
In May 2022, exchanges between adults and children supported vocabulary development strongly. There was also an important curriculum concern: some early years activities gave too much attention to enjoyment rather than the knowledge children should gain. The knowledge needed for later subjects required clearer definition. Learning purpose. An enjoyable activity needs a clear teaching aim; this is a useful point to discuss when considering the nursery.
Staffing includes a Pre-School teacher and learning support assistants serving early years. For families whose child needs additional help, the school’s inclusion lead has responsibility for SEND and can be contacted through the office. The school aims to accommodate individual needs and let children work at a pace suited to them.
Behaviour expectations use three short prompts: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Ready. The school aims to develop self-discipline through adults’ example, discussion and relationships with families. These give parents concrete language to use when talking about expectations with their child.
Child protection training applies to all school staff. Concerns can be raised with the safeguarding team at safeguarding@wgpglt.co.uk, giving families a direct contact route.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Buckinghamshire’s co-ordinated admissions scheme and meet the normal application deadline. Treat the nursery enquiry and the Reception application as two distinct tasks: joining Pre-School does not replace applying for school.
Nursery enquiries go to the school office on 01628 521634 or office@wgpglt.co.uk. This is the direct route for requesting nursery admissions information.
School tours can be booked through the same office. Pre-School stay and play sessions also form part of the opportunities for prospective families to get to know the provision.
