Stories shape the learning at Suttons: its nursery combines a story-led curriculum with play, adult-led activities and opportunities for children to choose their own pursuits. Books provide a starting point, rather than the whole day.
On Suttons Lane in Hornchurch, the provision forms part of Suttons Primary School. Pre-Nursery serves two-year-olds, while Nursery is for children aged three to four. That distinction gives families two age-specific starting points within the school's early years provision.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides the curriculum. In parent terms, this means developing communication, movement and relationships alongside early reading, number work, creativity and understanding the world. Suttons combines experiences through play with focused teaching, so children have both time to explore their interests and activities organised by adults.
Indoor and outdoor learning spaces support that mix. Children can take part in planned tasks or initiate activities themselves, with free-flow opportunities across the provision. Physical learning includes jumping, running and throwing: movement is part of the curriculum, alongside language and early number skills.
Creative work has a named place in the calendar. Early years children participate in Take One Artist week, exploring an artist's work before making their own interpretations; the resulting work features in the Take One Artist Exhibition. Cameras, interactive whiteboards and iPads also feature in early years activities, including games and listening to music. These give children different ways to explore and express ideas.
Ofsted's inspection on 11 and 12 July 2024 identified a clear Nursery emphasis on speaking and understanding language, with stories, rhymes and alphabet learning. A separate concern concerned the school curriculum in some subjects: new content was not consistently established, and some tasks did not serve the intended learning, affecting recall. That was a school-level improvement point, rather than a nursery-specific judgement.
Food arrangements extend beyond a packed lunch. Nursery and Pre-Nursery children can have a charged school dinner, paid ahead through School Gateway. The menu rotates over three weeks, with three choices, and includes fruit, vegetables and access to a salad bar. Families should refer to the school for current charges.
Foundation Stage children are offered fruit or vegetables each day. Cool Milk supplies a daily carton for registered children; milk is free for under-fives until the Friday before their fifth birthday. Registration is a separate parent action.
For additional learning needs, the school's approach includes identifying difficulties early, documenting development and providing support individually or in groups. Parents are encouraged to raise concerns and discuss progress. An English as an Additional Language teaching assistant works with class teachers when support is needed, following an initial settling period. These are school support arrangements that families can discuss in relation to their child.
Separate application. Attending Suttons Nursery does not guarantee a Suttons Reception place. Families must apply again through their home local authority; Havering residents use eAdmissions. Havering Council sets the criteria and decides admissions to this community school.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed.
Transition activity is distinct from allocation. The Reception intake arrangements include individual meetings about children's health and well-being, summer Stay and Play sessions, and possible visits to children's existing settings. These offer opportunities to share information and introduce children to staff; they do not secure admission.
Nursery enquiries go through the main school office at admin@suttons.havering.sch.uk, with an application form also offered. School visits can be arranged through the office.
