At a Glance

A reading corner, a planted nursery garden and Tumble Tots give Dalton’s youngest provision a character of its own. This is the nursery within Dalton School on Mayfield Avenue in Huddersfield, with morning, afternoon and eligible full-day attendance. Children have time to choose activities as well as learn with adults.

The Ofsted report published on 10 February 2026 judged early years to meet the Expected standard. Nursery children received support with beginning school, while the wider early-years findings highlighted language development and regular storytelling. There was also a clear teaching concern: some activities needed better explanation and closer attention to what children already knew.

The Nursery Day

Play and direct teaching share the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) begins with communication, physical development and learning to manage feelings and relationships. Literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding the world build on those foundations. For parents, that means learning to listen and cooperate matters alongside early reading and number work.

Continuous provision gives children opportunities to revisit skills through their chosen activities. They work alone, alongside friends and with practitioners; adult teaching includes music, stories, maths and Tumble Tots. The balance gives children both choice and guided practice.

Early reading uses Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Nursery foundations include poems, action rhymes and listening games, including oral blending: hearing separate sounds and combining them into a word. A reading corner is accessible daily, with books changed regularly. Stories are part of ordinary play, rather than confined to a lesson.

Outdoor learning includes the nursery garden, where families have contributed plants. Examples of nursery work include playdough hedgehogs and conker rolling. These give children concrete materials to explore through making and movement.

In February 2026, adults supported vocabulary through their interactions, and children regularly used pencils and other drawing materials. However, some children lost learning time because they were unsure how to use activities. The early-years improvement action was to make activities consistently extend existing knowledge. Clear adult guidance matters here as much as having resources to choose from.

Care and Support

Settling begins with Stay and Play, when a practitioner asks families about their child before attendance starts. Sharing that information gives staff a starting point for understanding the child. In February 2026, staff worked constructively with parents to help children feel settled and comfortable.

SchoolPing carries messages, photographs and letters to parents. Nursery children also have a home reading record, allowing families and staff to exchange comments about books. That creates a practical link between reading at home and nursery.

For children attending full days through eligibility for 30 funded hours, there is a lunchtime routine. Wider family support includes the Honeysuckle team, with inclusion, learning mentor and behaviour support roles. Dalton’s visual impairment outreach service also supports preschool children at home and in their settings, with help shaped by individual need.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their entry year. Kirklees handles online Reception applications; for September 2026 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2026.

Transition support is a separate matter. For the 2026 intake, classroom drop-ins and children-only transition sessions were scheduled for July 2026. Similar learning areas across nursery and Reception are intended to make the move feel familiar. Familiarity helps with the change of routine; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoon attendance runs from 11.45am to 2.45pm. The all-day session, from 8.45am to 2.45pm, is conditional on eligibility for 30 hours of funding. These are distinct attendance patterns, so the full-day option depends on the family meeting that condition.

Contact the Main Office to register for eligible funded provision, on 01484 538729 or office.dalton@kirkleeseducation.uk. Children are expected to wear nursery uniform.
