An early start with letter sounds gives Lepton’s nursery a clear link to the school’s reading approach. Nursery children begin phonics within a curriculum that uses Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. For parents, that puts early literacy among the concrete features of the provision.
The nursery sits on the school site in Lepton, with the academy based on Station Road, Huddersfield. Its wider setting is Church of England, and the school welcomes families from different backgrounds and faiths.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds provides the school’s phonics framework. Children learn sounds and letter names before using them to construct words. The nursery forms part of that early reading pathway, giving children an introduction to the relationship between spoken sounds and written letters.
In June 2021, nursery home-learning activities combined movement, stories, drawing and number work. These were activities for children at home during that period. On 21 June, The Very Hungry Caterpillar supplied a starting point for drawing a butterfly, while number tasks involved counting to 20, recognising numerals presented out of sequence and practising number formation. Challenges extended the number work for children ready to go further.
Another activity linked a story with learning about earthworms and drawing a worm. Children were asked to recall something from the story; an adult could record their words for them to trace, with independent letter writing as a further challenge. Movement tasks included hopping, stretching and star jumps. Together, these examples show how the nursery’s home learning connected physical activity with language, observation and early mathematics.
Inclusion is a school-wide aim. Lepton says it works with families and other agencies so children can participate in school life, and maintains relationships with professionals in education, social care and health. For a family considering the nursery, this places support within a wider school structure rather than making it solely a classroom matter.
Kirklees Keep In Mind is the school’s wellbeing partner. A linked Parent and Community Worker can advise parents individually or in groups, providing a route for family support alongside children’s education.
School meals are supplied by Kirklees School Meal Catering Services. This is the school’s catering arrangement; nursery families should distinguish it from the arrangements attached to their own booked session.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process.
For the September 2026 intake, applications went through Kirklees’ online primary admissions route, with a deadline of Thursday 15 January 2026. That cycle is past.
For children starting school in September 2025, Lepton aimed to introduce school life gradually, allowing time to meet Early Years staff and build friendships. That settling aim concerns the move into school; it does not confer an admissions advantage.
