Indoor exploration, outdoor learning and time alongside Reception children shape this school nursery’s character. Manor Road Academy’s nursery sits within the school’s early years provision in Golcar, Huddersfield. Children can join in the term after turning 3, subject to places being available.
The nursery shares an early years unit with Reception, including classrooms and an outdoor area. That makes contact with older early years children part of nursery life. The school puts social and emotional development first and describes its approach as matching support and challenge to children’s developmental stage, rather than age alone.
Activity alternates with group teaching across the early years day. Children explore indoors and outside, gather for phonics and English, and take part in sessions about the world around them. Number activities, stories, songs and rhymes also feature. These are the ingredients of the shared early years routine; the nursery has separate morning and afternoon session times.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of learning. In parent terms, these cover talking and listening, relationships and emotions, movement, early reading and writing, maths, discovering the world and creative expression. Development Matters also informs curriculum progression. The emphasis reaches beyond preparation for reading: physical development and learning to communicate have their own place.
Within the classrooms and outdoor space, children choose activities while adults join their learning and provide guided opportunities. The school aims to build independence through choices, challenge and controlled risks. Early years geography starts with close observation of the surroundings, encouraging children to comment and ask questions. It gives exploration a clear purpose.
Settling starts with getting to know the children and helping them become familiar with their learning surroundings. Home visits and transition visits form part of the early years partnership with families. Parents’ evenings, Class Dojo updates, Evidence Me observations and reading mornings provide further contact, alongside conversations at the beginning and end of the day. Families have several ways to share information and follow their child’s learning.
My Happy Mind runs weekly from Nursery onwards, using stories, reflection and practical activities to introduce emotional awareness and ways to manage feelings. Its parent app allows families to continue the learning at home. These are concrete links between the nursery’s emotional development priorities and family life.
Across the school, SEND support is tailored to each child’s barriers to learning, with the aim of supporting participation alongside children of the same age. The wider support network includes occupational therapists and speech, language and communication therapists. At lunchtime, school staff help children learn the routine and encourage healthy food choices.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Kirklees Council and meet the normal application deadline. Treat that application as a separate step, even when your child already attends nursery.
Daily contact offers a different kind of continuity: nursery children learn alongside Reception children with the early years team. Transition visits also form part of family preparation. Familiar people and surroundings are useful practical connections, but they do not secure admission.
The morning nursery session runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon runs from 12.20pm to 3.30pm. A lunchtime session runs from 11.45am to 12.30pm. These times matter when fitting nursery around work and collection arrangements.
Visits can be arranged by contacting the school. For enquiries, telephone 01484 652954 or email office@golcarjin.com. The nursery is on Manor Road, Golcar, Huddersfield, HD7 4QE.
