Carpet activities, time to choose activities and a story or song before home give this nursery morning a clear rhythm. Foundation 1 is the nursery provision at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary Academy in Sheepridge, Huddersfield, with a nursery teacher and an early years leadership role within the school team. It is a school-based start, with learning organised around short teaching inputs and longer periods of activity.
Catholic education is part of that setting’s character. The religious education programme, The Way, The Truth and The Life, starts in Foundation Stage. The school aims to help children connect religious stories with their own experiences and think about how they behave, bringing faith into learning from the early years.
The morning begins with carpet-based settling activities between 9.00 and 9.10, followed by a brief introduction to maths or Understanding the World. That gives children a shared starting point before they move into activities. From 9.30 to 11.15, the nursery combines free-flow provision with focused groups; snack is woven into this part of the morning rather than forming a separate timetable block.
In practical terms, this early years foundation stage (EYFS) day alternates adult teaching with opportunities for children to explore activities. The closing sequence includes tidying, phonics and key skills, then a story or singing between 11.50 and 12.00 before home. The balance matters: children have time for activity, but also practise gathering together and bringing a session to an end.
At the July 2024 inspection, nursery children were taking part in activities preparing them for phonics, and children across early years were learning routines quickly. Outdoor learning also had a concrete mathematical purpose: early years children used dinosaurs for counting while working on number bonds. Activities extended what adults had taught, giving children another way to practise the learning through play.
Settling starts within the morning routine, with activities on the carpet before the first teaching input. For children who have identified additional needs or concerns before joining, entry arrangements can include transition visits, meetings with parents and staff, or a visit by the SENCO or teacher to the child’s previous setting. This allows preparation to focus on the individual child.
Parents can raise support concerns with the class teacher. Where an Additional Needs Plan is needed, targets are reviewed each term with parents, the teacher and SENCO. SchoolPing carries school messages through an app, email or a web account, giving families more than one way to receive communication. An integrated calendar and parents’ evening booking are also available through SchoolPing, so families can keep dates and appointment arrangements alongside their school messages. Snacks form part of the nursery’s activity time.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application: for entry in September 2027, apply online through Kirklees Council by 15 January 2027 and complete the school’s supplementary form as well. Treat this as a fresh application, even if your child already attends nursery.
Transition preparation is a separate matter. Children have an opportunity to meet their next class teacher during the summer term. Some can have additional meetings with staff or time in the next classroom, with photographs and planning meetings used where appropriate. These arrangements support familiarity with the next stage; they do not secure admission.
The nursery morning finishes with its story or singing and home-time sequence at noon. This is a practical collection point to weigh against work and other childcare arrangements. The school’s breakfast club admits children from Reception through Year 6, so it does not cover nursery children.
Nursery children do not need a PE kit. Clothing and shoes should be labelled. To enquire or arrange a school tour, telephone the office on 01484 310700; enquiries can also go to office@ourladyoflourdesschool.org.uk.
