Listening games give Reinwood’s nursery a clear starting point: children begin with sounds, attention and conversation. This is a separate nursery within the school’s Foundation Stage unit, alongside Reception, on Burfitts Road in Oakes, Huddersfield. The organisation brings nursery staff into the same team structure as colleagues working with the next age group.
Reinwood calls itself the I can school. Its stated emphasis is on kindness, sharing and respect for people and their belongings, giving families a clear sense of the behaviour it wants children to develop.
Daily phonics begins in nursery with Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds. Children play listening games and learn to tell sounds apart. The focus is on hearing, remembering and discussing sounds, giving early reading preparation a practical starting point that parents can recognise and reinforce through conversation.
Learning also has a link with home. Families can contribute achievements to their child’s Learning Journey through the I am so Proud initiative. Examples include being helpful, showing growing maturity or being brave at the dentist. These contributions let staff hear about progress beyond the nursery session, rather than limiting the record to what happens in class.
Staffing includes a nursery teacher and classroom support assigned to nursery, with nursery nurses also forming part of the school team. For children with additional needs, the school works with specialist services when required, including Early Years SEN, occupational therapists and the Complex Communication and Interaction Team. These links provide routes to specialist involvement alongside classroom support.
Parents with concerns about their child’s needs should begin with the class teacher. Where further help or a specialist referral is needed, the teacher involves the special educational needs coordinator. There is a clear first conversation to have.
Across Reinwood Infant and Nursery School, food routines include milk during the morning break and fruit later in the day; children are encouraged to drink water. Packed lunches should contain healthy choices, with sweets, chocolate bars and fizzy drinks excluded. The school also uses a positive approach to behaviour, with training extending to lunchtime supervisors, so its expectations involve adults beyond the teaching team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Kirklees admissions. For September 2026 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle is now past. Nursery attendance was not among the priority criteria for that intake, which centred on care status, the admission area and siblings.
Preparation for starting Reception is separate from allocation. Parents are invited to a preliminary meeting covering learning, routines and administration, and children have an opportunity to meet their class teacher before starting. This gives families a practical introduction to the next stage.
Nursery applications can be obtained online or collected as a paper form from the school office. School visits can be arranged by making an appointment with the administrator, giving parents a direct way to meet the setting before applying.
