Nursery at The Mount School

A train-themed Baby Room, outdoor digging and a day that stretches from breakfast to high tea give The Mount Nursery a character of its own. This is The Mount School’s nursery in Edgerton, Huddersfield, with provision for babies and toddlers alongside pre-school for children aged three to five. Purpose-built nursery spaces sit alongside access to school facilities when appropriate. The distinction matters: nursery life has its own rooms, care routines and booking arrangements.
Play takes different forms as children grow. In the Baby Room, a station clock and a train climbing frame sit alongside wooden toys, soft fabrics and black-and-white sensory materials. Outdoor experiences include an astroturf area, decking, time on the school field and garden outings in prams. These give younger children opportunities to explore textures and movement as well as their surroundings.
Toddlers build, paint, dance and climb, with adults helping them practise taking turns and sharing. Pre-school introduces counting, problem-solving and early reading through play, alongside creative activities and outdoor exploration. Children can use outdoor areas daily for running, climbing and digging. Active periods alternate with rest and quieter activities.
Learning observations follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), tracking children’s development. Depending on age and stage, enrichment includes library visits and lessons in ICT, French and music.
The ISI inspection of 10 to 12 December 2024 found clear speech and attentive listening in pre-school, alongside effective nursery teaching of counting and number recognition up to ten. Those findings concern the provision operating at that time; they should not be read as an assessment of the newer baby rooms.
Each child has a key person. For babies, staff work with families around familiar feeding, sleeping and play patterns, giving continuity between home and nursery. Rest takes place in quiet spaces according to children’s natural sleep rhythms. Child-sized toilets and patient help support toilet routines.
Getting familiar with the setting can begin during a visit: children may explore and play if comfortable. The team includes a nursery manager with qualified teacher status, a nursery teacher with Early Years Teacher status and a practitioner with a Level 3 EYFS qualification. Famly carries observations, updates and messages, helping parents follow their child’s day.
Breakfast, lunch, high tea, drinks and snacks form part of the standard fee package. The nursery operates a nut-free policy, but cannot promise an environment free of every allergen; dietary needs are accommodated where reasonably practical. Application information covers medical conditions, allergies and additional needs, with consent sought for support from professionals such as speech and language therapists or SEND specialists. In December 2024, early-years staffing ratios were maintained through rotas covering indoor and outdoor areas.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families need to make a separate application for Kindergarten, The Mount’s Reception class, through the school office. Entry is in September following a child’s fourth birthday, with places allocated in the preceding autumn term. An offer depends on the application process and acceptance of the school’s terms. Treat the nursery booking and the school application as separate decisions.
Full days run from 7:30am to 6:00pm. Pre-school also has morning sessions ending at 12:30pm and afternoon sessions beginning at 1:00pm; half-day places are limited. Minimum attendance is four sessions or two days each week. The nursery operates for 51 weeks, closing for bank holidays and Christmas week.
Booking flexibility. Sessions cannot be exchanged, and absences remain chargeable. Changes require the manager’s agreement and four weeks’ notice, so choose a pattern that fits regular childcare needs.
Eligible children aged nine months to five years can use 15 or 30 funded hours, stretched across 51 weeks, with no more than ten funded hours applied daily. Families apply through the government portal, supply an eligibility code and complete a funding agreement. Meals, consumables and additional services attract an optional contribution on funded hours. Opting out means supplying the required care items and food, and access to some experiences may be restricted. Ask the school for current charges.
Toddler and pre-school uniform provision includes polo shirts, a fleece and a cap, subject to fair-use arrangements and the funded-services opt-out. Families also supply wellies, waterproofs, indoor footwear, spare clothes and a water bottle. Parents remain responsible until handing their child to staff; collection must be prompt.
