Stories, conversation and outdoor challenges give Bellfield’s nursery its character. Reading begins with rhymes and games, while large outdoor equipment gives children opportunities to test themselves physically. This is the school’s own Nursery, known as Foundation Stage 1, on Saxby Road in Hull.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play shapes the learning. Bellfield follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), bringing together language, physical and social development with early mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond early reading and number work to how children communicate, explore and manage relationships.
Children’s interests help shape the learning spaces, and staff use observations to adjust activities and resources. The school aims to develop curiosity and independence through this approach. Assessment draws on children’s work, photographs, their own comments and feedback from parents, giving families a contribution to decisions about what comes next.
Outdoor learning extends the classroom activities. In January 2023, adults encouraged children to attempt challenges using large equipment and introduced vocabulary connected with their topics. Physical exploration and language development therefore sit alongside one another. Nursery reading activities included stories, rhymes and games, giving children playful ways to become familiar with books and spoken language.
The nursery staffing roles include a teacher and a nursery nurse within the wider early years team. In January 2023, staff built positive connections with families, and early years routines established clear expectations for children. Those relationships matter when home and nursery need to work together around a child’s development.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), HCAT uses an assess, plan, do and review cycle. Parents contribute to the support plan, with formal SEND reviews at least termly. This gives families scheduled opportunities to discuss progress and agree changes to support.
SEND support. In January 2023, support across the school varied between curriculum areas, with reading and spelling less consistently supported than mathematics. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding confined to Nursery. Families weighing additional support should consider how targets and progress will be reviewed for their child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hull City Council’s normal admissions process by the applicable deadline.
For entry in 2027/28, attendance at an HCAT primary nursery for at least the three terms before Reception gives priority under the fourth oversubscription criterion. This comes after looked-after and previously looked-after children and the two sibling categories, following allocation for children with an EHCP. It is a conditional priority, not an assured place.
Morning Nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am. The afternoon starts at 12:30pm, with collection between 3:15pm and 3:30pm. The afternoon collection window matters when arranging childcare or coordinating another pickup.

The morning session is 8:30am to 11:30am. Afternoon Nursery starts at 12:30pm and finishes between 3:15pm and 3:30pm.
The EYFS combines learning through play with language, social and physical development, literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Outdoor activities extend classroom learning.
No. A separate application is required through Hull City Council. For 2027/28 entry, at least the three terms of attendance at an HCAT primary nursery before Reception gives fourth-criterion oversubscription priority, subject to higher-priority allocations.
