Nursery at Broadacre Primary School

In September 2022, song, rhyme and indoor and outdoor learning spaces shaped Broadacre’s early-years provision. The nursery forms part of Broadacre Primary School on Amy Johnson Way in Hull, with morning and afternoon sessions. For families, that means choosing a session around the household’s day rather than assuming a full school day of care.
Language is a practical focus. In September 2022, early-years staff used singing and rhymes to extend children’s vocabulary, while carefully planned conversations with adults helped children persist and approach learning with purpose. Words are learned through interaction, with adults supporting how children tackle an activity as well as what they learn from it.
The early-years learning spaces extended both outdoors and indoors. In September 2022, these areas were bright and welcoming, giving children learning environments on both sides of the classroom door.
Personal and social learning has a named approach: Jigsaw, taught across the school, including the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its themes include Relationships, Healthy Me and Celebrating Difference. For a nursery parent, these give a concrete sense of the emotional and social content alongside other learning. Broadacre aims to help children recognise feelings and respond to them, with health and respect also part of that work.
Parents can follow the term’s learning through curriculum overviews for each year group. These explain the content children cover, offering a starting point for conversations about their nursery experiences.
Broadacre aims to involve children with SEND and their parents in decisions about provision. The school aspires to a person-centred approach, with families taking an active role in planning support.
Safety responsibilities include an EYFS Safeguarding Officer within the school’s safeguarding team. All staff receive regular child-safety training, providing a shared responsibility across the adults working with children.
Food sits within the wider school arrangements: pupils have four lunch choices each day. This is a school-wide offer; families should distinguish it from their child’s particular nursery session when planning the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Hull City Council coordinates admissions and makes offers, so choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.
Continuity of learning. In September 2022, links between early-years learning and later learning needed greater clarity in some subjects. That concern matters to families looking for a connected progression beyond nursery.
Morning nursery runs from 9:00 to 11:30; the afternoon session runs from 11:30 to 3:00. These are the times to use when considering collection arrangements and the fit with work or other childcare.
Breakfast provision. Nursery children are excluded from the school’s free breakfast-club pilot. Families should keep that restriction in mind when considering an earlier start.
The school expects children to wear uniform: a white polo shirt with a royal-blue cardigan or sweatshirt, alongside grey or black trousers, shorts or a skirt. Leggings and tracksuit bottoms are not permitted. Correctly coloured, unbranded items are accepted, giving parents flexibility over where they shop. Clothing should be clearly labelled.
