Learning to do things independently gives Bude Park’s nursery its character. In July 2024, children in the nursery class made a positive start to school life, choosing from planned learning opportunities that helped them become independent learners. Cooperation mattered too: children played together and learned alongside one another. For parents, that gives a concrete picture of the nursery’s strengths: learning involves both doing things for yourself and working with other children.
The nursery belongs to Bude Park Primary School on Cookbury Close in Bransholme, Hull. The school serves children from three years of age. Its stated aims include supporting each child’s emotional, social, intellectual and physical development, giving personal development a place alongside learning.
Independence here has a practical basis. The nursery’s learning provision was deliberately planned in July 2024, giving children opportunities to develop as independent learners. Adults also used purposeful exchanges to support learning across the early years. Taken together, those findings describe a balance between children developing independence and adults helping them move their understanding forward.
Early mathematical learning included counting practice and making repeating patterns. These are concrete activities through which children can work with numbers and sequences. Early reading involved phonics, with children using their knowledge of sounds to begin developing reading skills. These findings concern the early years overall; the nursery-specific strength was the organisation of opportunities for independent learning.
There is an important qualification. In July 2024, the early years curriculum was carefully planned, but its delivery varied. Some activities gave insufficient attention to vocabulary and the prime areas of learning. The quality identified in the nursery did not extend consistently throughout the early years. The improvement required was better organisation of learning, because uneven experiences left children less prepared for key stage 1 than they should have been. That distinction matters when considering both the nursery day and the education that follows it.
Relationships were a strength of the early years in July 2024. Adults supported learning through interactions with a clear purpose, while children cooperated in play and learning. This makes adult support relevant to the everyday experience: it helped children take part and learn together.
Bude Park also says it respects children’s individual needs. Its emphasis on social and emotional development fits a nursery experience in which relationships and growing independence both matter.
Attending Bude Park’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
