Choosing time gives Burstwick’s early years provision a clear point of character: children select their own learning activities, rather than having every choice made for them. The nursery belongs to Burstwick Community Primary School on Main Street in Burstwick, placing this first experience of education within a primary school setting.
Early years provision was graded Good at the Ofsted inspection on 28 and 29 June 2022. That judgement applies to the school’s early years provision, rather than being a separate nursery rating. Kindness, curiosity and respect were encouraged from children’s first experience of early years, giving social development a place alongside learning.
Choice is part of the learning day. EYFS children have time to select activities for themselves, while continuous provision in early years includes opportunities for artistic and cultural expression. This gives children some responsibility for deciding what to explore. Their interests have room in the session.
Early reading also starts with the youngest children. In June 2022, staff drew attention to accurate sounds from the beginning of school, with phonics teaching supported by staff training intended to make the approach consistent. For parents, the concrete emphasis is on hearing and recognising sounds as an early step towards reading.
Behaviour expectations begin in Nursery. In June 2022, staff received support to address the reasons behind misbehaviour, so responding to difficulties included considering what was causing them.
Classrooms have spaces where children can calm themselves, with resources intended to help them manage emotions. Across the school, the Sunshine Room provides a quieter setting for work with the Emotional Literacy Support Assistant, or ELSA, and for support from external agencies. Parents can approach their child’s class teacher about a referral for ELSA support.
The school’s meals come from Inmans Primary School. Parents are informed when the menu changes, and allergen information can be checked through the school office. This gives families a practical route for reviewing ingredients.
Support planning. A school-wide improvement action in June 2022 concerned a very few cases where staff support plans did not match education, health and care plans closely enough. For families whose child has an EHC plan, that makes the connection between agreed needs and everyday support an important consideration.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through their home local authority by its normal application deadline. East Riding of Yorkshire Council is the school’s admission authority, but families living outside East Riding apply through the authority where they live.
Late applications are considered after those received on time. Treat the Reception application as a separate task even while your child is attending nursery.
Foundation Stage sessions run from 9am to noon and from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Those times give families two clear session windows around which to plan their day.
