At a Glance

Rainbow challenges, small-group phonics and outdoor exploration give Cleeve’s nursery a clear learning identity. This is Foundation Stage 1, the nursery provision within Cleeve Primary School on Wawne Road in Bransholme, Hull. Children can attend morning or afternoon sessions, with full days also offered.

Ofsted’s February 2026 inspection judged the school’s early years provision to be Strong standard. That judgement covers early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children developed independence across indoor and outdoor activities, with staff helping them gain confidence quickly.

The Nursery Day

Play provides the starting point. Cleeve aims to combine activities directed by adults with those children choose themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, physical development and learning to manage feelings and relationships, alongside literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond early reading and number work.

Named nursery themes include On the farm, In the garden and Celebrations. Literacy uses Talk for Writing, with traditional tales providing much of the starting material. Children learn texts through actions and text maps before changing elements and developing their own ideas. This gives storytelling a physical and visual dimension, helping children practise language before independent writing.

In February 2026, early years teaching followed carefully ordered learning steps, with staff adjusting activities to children’s development. Rainbow challenges gave children opportunities to practise earlier learning or take their understanding further. Small-group phonics began in Nursery, while adults deliberately introduced vocabulary and extended children’s thinking through conversation.

The outdoor area supports nature exploration and activities that develop the small movements needed for writing. Indoors, accessible resources help children tackle learning tasks independently. Staff also support problem-solving and help children learn to regulate their emotions. These are practical foundations for joining in, persevering and working alongside others.

Care and Support

Settling was a strength of early years in February 2026: children became comfortable quickly with support from caring staff. Weekly play and stay sessions in Foundation Stage 1 let parents participate in the setting, making home and nursery relationships part of the routine.

Collection also creates time for conversation. Doors open at 11.20am for the morning session and 2.50pm for the afternoon session, with parents able to talk to staff during these periods. This offers a regular opportunity to discuss how a child is getting on.

Early years staff adapted activities for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), engaging those who needed extra help. Across the school, children receiving SEND support have a One Page Profile and Individual Provision Map; targets are reviewed termly with parents invited to discuss progress. That provides a structured way to agree and revisit support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Hull residents apply to Hull City Council through My School Portal; families living elsewhere apply through their home authority.

Transition support is a separate matter. For children on the SEND Register who would benefit, arrangements can include a photograph-based transition book, visits to new classrooms and introductions to staff in familiar surroundings. These measures help children prepare for a change of setting; they do not determine admission.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am, afternoons from noon to 3.00pm, and full days from 8.30am to 3.00pm. Universal funding covers 15 hours for children attending mornings or afternoons. Eligible parents can access extended funding of 30 hours for full-day attendance.

Additional sessions can be purchased if space permits. Discuss these with nursery staff and contact the school for current charges. A nursery breakfast club is also offered.

For nursery applications, contact the school office on 01482 825279 or email admin@cleeve.hull.sch.uk. Visits can be arranged by contacting the school. Report absences promptly: nursery attendance is monitored, and prolonged unexplained absence can lead to a funded place ending.
