At a Glance

Learning to talk, join in and manage familiar routines gives Dorchester’s nursery its character. This is the nursery provision within Dorchester Primary School in Bransholme, Hull. Language development has a clear purpose here: some children begin early years needing help with speech and social interaction, and teaching responds to those starting points.

The May 2026 Ofsted inspection judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Conversation and social learning are central to the early years curriculum. Adults establish what children can already do, then adjust learning to suit them. Support with speaking and interacting helps children participate in other learning too, rather than treating language as an isolated task.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning, development and care. In parent terms, it covers communication, movement and relationships alongside early reading and writing, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Play, adult guidance and learning from other children are all part of that framework.

Concrete activities make early ideas easier to grasp. In May 2026, early years children used spots on ladybirds to explore doubling, linking counting to a visible example. Early writing begins with understanding the marks children produce, building towards written words. These examples concern the school’s early years provision as a whole.

Nursery routines also connect children with the wider building. Children were able to form a line and make their way comfortably to the dinner hall. Learning how to move together gives everyday routines a practical social purpose.

Care and Support

Settling is planned, with relationships doing much of the work. In May 2026, children joining nursery benefited from an organised transition process and continuing supportive relationships with adults. Staff also developed constructive relationships with parents and carers, helping children become comfortable in school life.

Additional needs receive support within early years, including prompt contact with outside agencies when specialist help is needed. For families concerned about development, the first step is a conversation with the class teacher. Parents and staff decide together whether to monitor progress or introduce extra help, with the special educational needs co-ordinator involved where appropriate.

Regular progress meetings provide time to discuss development and agree next steps. Families can also arrange a conversation between meetings, so concerns need not wait for the next scheduled discussion.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hull City Council and meet the normal application deadline.

For entry in 2027/28, attendance at a HCAT primary nursery for at least the three terms immediately before Reception qualifies under the fourth oversubscription criterion, after children with EHCP allocations and the higher-ranked care and sibling categories. This is conditional priority, not an automatic place.

Transition support is a separate matter. Children who need additional preparation can have short classroom visits, a photo book introducing people and places, or new staff introduced in familiar surroundings. Communication Passports can pass useful information to the next team, helping support continue across the change.
