Nursery at Ings Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. An outdoor classroom gives Ings Primary School’s nursery a practical point of distinction: learning has space beyond the classroom walls. On Ings Road in Hull, this is the school’s own nursery, with 52 places and entry from the term following a child’s third birthday.
The hours offer has two parts: a flexible 15-hour arrangement and a small number of 30-hour places. That makes the nursery relevant to families with different childcare needs, although the limited longer-hours provision matters when planning a working week.
Language development is a clear focus in the early years. In January 2025, adults helped children practise vocabulary through play, repeating words such as full and empty. This gives new language an immediate purpose: children use it to describe what they are doing rather than learning words in isolation.
Physical play also brings children together. During the same inspection, nursery children and their Reception peers supported one another while balancing on substantial outdoor apparatus. Cooperation was part of the activity, alongside the physical challenge. Children also cleared away materials after playing and followed the behaviour expectations, giving everyday routines a role in developing responsibility.
The nursery has an outdoor classroom, as does Reception. Lunch for these two groups runs from 11:30am to 12:30pm, providing a fixed point within the day. These are concrete parts of the nursery experience: outdoor learning, play with other children and a lunchtime routine.
Communication support includes adaptations for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). In January 2025, staff used short phrases of two words where appropriate, helping children communicate with adults and peers and join group activities. The detail matters: support was built into participation in play.
There is also a school SEND coordinator whom families can approach for advice. However, the January 2025 findings included a wider mainstream-school concern: some activities did not suit pupils with SEND sufficiently, leaving them dependent on adult help. This was not identified specifically as a nursery weakness, but families should distinguish the positive early-years communication examples from that broader concern.
The early-years team includes NNEB-qualified experience and an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) with Creative Mindfulness training. All school staff receive child-protection training, and concerns are passed to the designated safeguarding lead. These arrangements give families an identified route for raising worries.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hull’s local authority admissions process, following the normal admissions timetable. Choosing nursery provision and obtaining a school place are separate decisions.
Nursery and Reception children have played together outdoors, including the January 2025 balancing activity. That contact offers experience of being alongside older children; it should not be read as an admissions advantage.
Contact the school office to request a nursery place, using 01482 374367 or admin@ings.hull.sch.uk. Families can also arrange a school visit. For longer attendance, remember that only a small number of 30-hour places are offered.
The school’s clothing arrangements allow uniform without an embroidered logo, and recycled uniform can be obtained through the office. These options give families flexibility over how they source school clothing.
