Nursery at Lift Newington

Bikes, dough and early sound play give Lift Newington’s nursery its character: children learn through movement, conversation and exploration, alongside activities guided by adults. This is the school’s own nursery on Dairycoates Avenue in Hull, serving its youngest children from age three.
The nursery admission number is 52, based on two sessions each day. That is a nursery figure, rather than the capacity of the whole school. Children belong to the school’s early years provision, with an EYFS team and an inclusion team within the wider staff structure.
Play has a clear learning purpose here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning about feelings and relationships with speaking, listening and physical development. Children also explore early literacy, numbers and shapes, the world around them, and creative expression. Adult-guided activities sit alongside opportunities for children to choose and explore independently, giving the day both direction and room for individual interests.
Bike riding develops larger movements; dough and mark-making exercise smaller movements and hand control. Art, music and imaginative play bring further ways to express ideas. These are practical experiences rather than a day built solely around sitting and listening.
Language is a particular thread. In June 2025, Ofsted found that early years adults demonstrated vocabulary in conversation and used questions and planned activities to extend children’s thinking. Children developed confidence and independence. In the nursery, new sounds were introduced from the start, with play providing repeated opportunities to practise them. That connects early reading skills with activities children are already enjoying.
Settling is a partnership with parents. The nursery team works with families to help children become comfortable, while ongoing communication connects what adults know about a child at home and in nursery. The emphasis is on understanding individual needs and sharing progress, giving parents a continuing role beyond the initial start.
A snack table gives children access to crackers, fruit, water and milk during the day. For full-time children, lunch can be brought from home or cooked on site using a seasonal menu. Families can therefore choose between a packed lunch and a prepared meal. Dietary needs and allergies should be shared with the school; food containing nuts is prohibited.
Security has concrete routines. Entrances and gates are kept secure during the day, staff supervise learning and play, and two staff members attend dismissal. The school’s SEND coordinator can be reached through the main office, providing a contact for families who need to discuss additional support.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place at Lift Newington. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, using Hull City Council’s coordinated arrangements. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself, with the Reception application treated as a separate task.
Morning, afternoon and full-day sessions give families different attendance options. The nursery accepts government funding for 15-hour and 30-hour places, with additional sessions available on a paid basis. Contact the school office about availability and current charges.
Uniform is encouraged for nursery children. Comfortable clothes and footwear that children can manage themselves support everyday independence, and a spare outfit belongs on the child’s peg for changes. For nursery enquiries, call 01482 305630 or email contactus@liftnewington.org. The school is on Dairycoates Avenue, Hull, HU3 5DD.
