Nursery at Priory Primary School

Stories, conversation and growing independence give Priory’s early years provision its character. The nursery has 52 places within the school’s Foundation Stage in west Hull, and its Foundation Stage 1 class is Chestnut. This puts the nursery within the primary school’s early learning provision.
In May 2026, Ofsted judged early years to be at a Strong standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children were engaged in their learning and increasingly independent, with adults adapting activities to their starting points.
Language gets attention throughout early years, including during stories and snacks. Adults demonstrate how to express ideas, then encourage children to develop their own explanations. Conversation is part of learning. Books return repeatedly, giving children time to understand them more deeply and add new words to their vocabulary.
The early years foundation stage combines sessions guided by adults with opportunities for children to develop independence. Activities take account of what children can already do, while earlier ideas and tasks are revisited to help learning stick. For parents, the useful distinction is that repetition has a purpose: children build on familiar experiences rather than simply moving through unrelated activities.
Learning takes place both in the classroom and outdoors. In May 2026, children sustained their interest in both environments, and the early years spaces had resources to support their activities. The combination gives children opportunities to learn in different surroundings while developing confidence in doing things for themselves.
Settling rests on adults who listen and respond to children’s needs. In May 2026, children adjusted quickly to school with help from caring staff. Adult attention therefore supports both the emotional change of starting school and the first steps in learning.
Parents can communicate through the school administration email, year group email addresses or telephone. For families discussing special educational needs or disabilities, the school’s SEND co-ordinator can be reached by telephone. That provides a direct contact for conversations about a child’s support.
A separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal school admissions route and meet its deadline. Hull City Council provides the route for school-place applications, so choosing the nursery should remain a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Before Reception begins, new starters are offered a summer-term home visit to meet their teacher. They can also visit their future classroom several times. These opportunities help children become familiar with the next stage; they are transition arrangements, not an admissions advantage.
Priory is on Priory Road, Hull, HU5 5RU. Nursery enquiries can go to the school office on 01482 509631 or admin@priory.hull.sch.uk. The administration team passes queries to the relevant staff member, giving families a starting point for contact.
Families can also contact the school to arrange a visit. Seeing the provision offers an opportunity to consider how its classroom and outdoor learning fit their child.
