Nursery at Sidmouth Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

In November 2022, early-years teaching at Sidmouth combined adult instruction with learning through play. This is the school’s Foundation Stage 1 (F1) provision, based on the Sidmouth Street site with the school’s other children. The main site lies between Tavistock Street and Sidmouth Street, off Newland Avenue: the nursery is physically part of the school’s everyday setting.

An Early Years Phase Leader also holds responsibility for early reading, bringing those two areas together within the staff structure.

The Nursery Day

The November 2022 early-years findings describe play activities planned by teachers alongside instruction. Adults also supported children as they became familiar with school routines.

For parents, that balance is the useful detail: children had opportunities for adult-guided learning and exploration through planned play activities. The early-years foundation stage experience described here involves both teaching and exploration, rather than leaving children to work everything out alone. Familiar routines also give children a framework for taking part in school life.

Care and Support

Support for additional needs involves families. Across Sidmouth, the school aims to recognise support needs early, discussing them with parents and children and involving outside agencies where necessary. A SEND co-ordinator provides a contact point. For a family raising a concern, this establishes a route into a conversation about their child’s needs.

Child protection responsibilities extend across the staff team. Staff receive training, watch for possible harm or neglect and pass concerns to the designated safeguarding lead. Children are told which adults they can approach. The school normally discusses concerns with parents before referring to another agency, unless doing so could compromise the child’s welfare.

Operation Encompass adds a specific link with the police. Notifications about domestic abuse affecting a child usually reach the school before the next school day begins, allowing staff to respond with that context in mind.

Moving On to Reception

Separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline; choosing F1 should not be treated as securing the next place.

Sidmouth follows the local authority’s admissions policy, and the School Admissions Team is the Reception contact. Families with siblings already at school should mark the sibling preference box on their application.

Practical Information

For an F1 application form and information about the nursery offer, contact the school office at the Sidmouth Street/Tavistock Street site or email admin@sidmouth.hull.sch.uk. General enquiries can also go to spsadmin@thrivetrust.uk or 01482 441152.

The school’s uniform includes a white polo shirt and navy cardigan or sweatshirt, with grey or black lower garments. Clothing should carry the child’s name, making misplaced items easier to return. Water bottles go home each evening for refilling.

Collection arrangements need communication too: the school asks for advance notice when an adult unfamiliar to staff will collect a child.

FAQs

It shares the Sidmouth Street site with the school’s other children. The main site is between Sidmouth Street and Tavistock Street, off Newland Avenue.

Ask the school office for an application form and information about the nursery offer, or email admin@sidmouth.hull.sch.uk.

No. Reception requires a separate application through the normal admissions process. The School Admissions Team is the contact for Reception admissions.

In November 2022, the early-years findings described a balance of adult teaching and planned play activities, with adults helping children understand school routines.

Contact the school’s SEND co-ordinator through 01482 441152. The school aims to identify support needs early, in consultation with families and, where necessary, outside agencies.
