Acting out Goldilocks and the Three Bears gives a useful picture of this nursery: stories become play, and play gives children a reason to try new language. St George's Primary School in Hull admits nursery children from age three. Its nursery is Foundation Stage 1, part of the school's early years provision.
At the Ofsted inspection on 2 and 3 October 2024, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery example gives parents something more concrete than a grade: children were using phrases from a familiar story as they acted it out.
Two sessions shape the day. The morning runs from 8:45am to 11:45am, while the afternoon runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. These are the Foundation Stage 1 times; the nursery's afternoon finishes later than the main school day.
Language learning has a practical form here. In October 2024, adults used questions and demonstrations to extend children's thinking and encouraged them to try unfamiliar vocabulary. The Goldilocks and the Three Bears activity brought that together through storytelling and dramatic play. Children could put the story's language to use rather than simply hear it.
School routines are also part of the learning. In October 2024, early years children were settled, calm and learning to cooperate in play. Adults helped them understand expectations and everyday routines. For a child beginning school life, learning how to join in sits alongside learning new words.
Extra support is organised through the school's SEND arrangements. The school aims to identify needs early, then develops individual programmes with parents and, where needed, outside agencies. Support can take place within the classroom, individually or in small groups. Parental involvement is part of planning that help.
Families can contact the school office to reach the Pastoral Lead about concerns causing stress or worry. The Parent Portal also gives parents a route to request parenting support, food bags or a conversation with the school nurse. These are school services for families, rather than descriptions of nursery meals or daily care routines.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Hull City Council's admissions route and meet the deadline for their child's application round. Treat the nursery application and the Reception application as two separate tasks: joining Foundation Stage 1 does not replace applying for primary school.
Nursery application forms come from the school office. Children are eligible for 15 free hours; families who believe they qualify for 30 funded hours can discuss eligibility with the office. The morning and afternoon session times give parents concrete points around which to plan collection.
