Purposeful play is the starting point here, with Little Cuthbert's for two-year-olds alongside Foundation 1 nursery within St Mary Queen of Martyrs VC Academy's early years provision. The setting belongs to a Catholic primary school in Sutton Park, Hull. Its nursery provision is part of the school, so the focus is on an early start to school life rather than a separate childcare setting.
Communication, independence and personal development are among the school's aims for its youngest children. Those priorities give parents a useful picture of the intended experience: learning to express needs and ideas matters alongside early number work and literacy.
Adults lead some learning, while children choose and initiate other activities. Play and practical experiences provide the basis for learning, with adults extending children's language and thinking through their interactions. Activities build on earlier learning, and assessment helps practitioners decide what to introduce next. This gives children's interests a place in the day alongside planned teaching.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers seven connected areas. In parent terms, that means developing movement, communication and relationships alongside maths, literacy, creative expression and an understanding of the world. Language, physical development and emotional and social development receive priority. Learning takes place indoors and outdoors, rather than being confined to classroom activities.
At the May 2022 inspection, the broader early years provision included daily maths teaching organised into manageable stages, with counters and shapes helping children practise counting. This is a dated picture of early years teaching, rather than a separate judgement on Little Cuthbert's.
Tapestry observations, emails, newsletters and conversations in person keep families in touch with their child's learning. Parents can also contribute observations through Tapestry. That creates a practical connection between experiences at home and what adults see in the setting.
Support sits within the school's wider team. A SEND coordinator oversees provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities, with contact through send@smqhull.org. The early years team works with families and outside agencies to support children with SEND or English as an additional language. For concerns about emotional wellbeing, the child's class teacher is the first contact.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and confers no priority under the 2027/28 arrangements. Families must apply separately through their home local authority using its Common Application Form. For September 2027 entry, the closing date is 15 January 2027.
A Supplementary Information Form is also requested for specified faith, sibling and staff criteria, with supporting evidence where required. It must reach the school by the same deadline. Treat the Reception application as a separate task even when your child already attends nursery.
Foundation 1 has a morning session from 8:40 to 11:40 and an afternoon session from 12:00 to 15:00. These times apply specifically to F1, so families should distinguish that provision from Little Cuthbert's when planning their arrangements.
For three- and four-year-olds, the school offers 15 funded hours, with an additional 15 for eligible families, making 30 in total. Enquiries can go through the contact form, by email to admin@smqhull.org or by telephone on 01482 825625. The school aims to answer enquiries within one business day.
