Play comes first in the plans for Little Cuthbert's, the nursery provision for two and three-year-olds at St Richard's VC Academy on Marfleet Lane in Hull. Its launch was planned for Autumn Term 2026, with a setting designed specifically for the school's youngest children. This is a school-based nursery within a Catholic primary academy, rather than a separate childcare provider.
The distinction between the new provision and the school's existing early years matters. In March 2024, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good. That judgement predates the planned Little Cuthbert's launch; it is not a separate inspection of the new nursery.
Little Cuthbert's places play at the centre of its intended approach to learning. The school intends play to be central to early learning at Little Cuthbert's.
There are concrete examples from the school's Foundation 1 children in summer 2026. They cared for caterpillars and observed their transformation into butterflies. In the garden, they planted seeds, watered them and took responsibility for their care. These activities connect discovery with something children can watch change over time: a living creature developing or a plant growing.
The school's early years curriculum was effective in March 2024, helping children extend their existing knowledge through activities with a clear learning purpose. Exploring the surrounding world was a recurring feature. Together, these examples give parents a picture of learning through observation and practical involvement, while belonging to the established early years provision before Little Cuthbert's planned opening.
Relationships with families were a strength of the Nursery class in March 2024. Contact with parents and carers began as children joined, making the start of nursery a shared undertaking between home and school. For a young child beginning school-based care, that early relationship gives family knowledge a place in the conversation.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and it gives no priority under the September 2027 admission arrangements. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority using the Common Application Form. The closing date for that intake is 15 January 2027.
For applications under the relevant faith, sibling or staff categories, a Supplementary Information Form and supporting evidence must also reach the school by that date. Completing this additional form does not replace the local authority application. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions: familiarity with the school does not reserve a place.
Families can register nursery interest through the Little Cuthbert's expression of interest form. The school can also be contacted at admin@strhull.org or on 01482 781928.
Additional nursery sessions for three-year-olds carry a charge; contact the school for current charges. Longer childcare coverage is an ambition rather than an established Little Cuthbert's booking offer: the school aims eventually to provide up to 50 weeks of nursery care each year, alongside wraparound care and a holiday club for siblings attending St Richard's. Families should distinguish that future vision from the initial nursery offer when considering how it fits their working week.
The provision is intended for two and three-year-olds, with a launch planned for Autumn Term 2026.
