Nursery at Thanet Primary School

A large classroom inside the main school and a dedicated outdoor play area give Thanet Nursery its own space within a primary school setting. Each morning and afternoon session has 39 places. Children can begin in the term after their third birthday, with part-time attendance usually organised around mornings or afternoons.
The provision combines learning through play with activities shaped around children's interests. It is a practical starting point for families seeking a school nursery with separate indoor and outdoor spaces. Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 27 and 28 April 2022; that judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Three-hour sessions provide the basic rhythm: mornings run from 8.30am to 11.30am, while afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Children usually attend five mornings or five afternoons each week. A limited number of extended funded places allow eligible children to attend full time for up to five days.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here centres on purposeful play, individual development and children's interests. Staff record interests and use them to shape activities in learning areas or teaching time. That gives children's own questions a place in what happens next, rather than treating every child as ready for the same experience.
Reading begins with stories, recognising print, listening to environmental sounds and practising rhyme. Mathematics introduces number, measurement, shape and space through practical exploration. These are recognisable early learning activities, with opportunities to explore sounds, print and mathematical ideas practically.
Creative play includes experimenting with materials in art and exploring threads, fabrics and fibres in design and technology. A creative area supports organised play with tools and materials. Jigsaw also begins in nursery, introducing personal, social and health education through themes about identity, aspirations and relationships. It gives feelings and relationships a place alongside early reading and mathematics.
The school's Inclusion Team connects families with teaching staff and outside specialists. Parents concerned about development can arrange a discussion with their child's class teacher, then agree whether monitoring or additional support is needed. Children receiving SEND support have an Individual Provision Map and One Page Profile, with targets reviewed termly alongside parents. This creates a defined route for discussing needs and reviewing support.
Food requires some advance planning. Thanet is a nut-free school. Children who remain through lunch incur a supervision charge, including those with extended funded hours; collecting a child for the lunch interval avoids that charge. Nursery Breakfast Club and Nursery After School Club can be booked through MCAS. Ask the school for current charges when arranging additional care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the normal admissions process. Hull residents apply to Hull City Council, while families living elsewhere apply through their home authority. Keep that application separate from arranging nursery attendance.
For children on the SEND register who would benefit from extra transition support, arrangements can include photographs of unfamiliar people and places, classroom visits and introductions to new staff in familiar surroundings. Staff also exchange information about provision and individual needs. These measures support familiarity with the next setting; they do not secure admission.
Curriculum continuity. In April 2022, inspectors identified a need for subject leaders to understand early years teaching better and strengthen links with later learning. This is a relevant consideration alongside the practical transition support.
Universal funding covers 15 hours each week. Extended funding depends on eligibility, and universal funded sessions take precedence over extended places. Additional paid sessions depend on vacancies and can only be guaranteed for a term. Eligibility codes need renewing and submitting for validation every three months; extended hours can begin in the term after eligibility is confirmed.
Session preferences are requested on the nursery application form, but the preferred pattern is not guaranteed. Contact the office on 01482 796193 or at admin@thanet.hull.sch.uk to enquire; visits can be booked by telephone.
A waterproof coat and labelled wellington boots are required and can remain at school. Uniform can be bought with or without the school logo, giving families a choice of retailer.
Children can be considered for a place from the start of the term after their third birthday.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am, and afternoon sessions from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Children usually attend five mornings or five afternoons each week.
