Independent exploration has a daily place in Thoresby’s nursery: children use the classroom’s learning areas, while adults introduce new ideas through directed sessions. This is nursery provision within Thoresby Primary School on Thoresby Street in Hull, with its curriculum organised as FS1 within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
The emphasis is on building from what children already know. For parents, that means a nursery curriculum intended to connect familiar experiences with the next steps in learning.
Daily classroom provision gives children opportunities to revisit learning for themselves. Adult-led sessions introduce new content, so the day combines independent exploration with direct teaching. The distinction matters: children have time to practise existing knowledge as well as encounter something new.
Each term’s curriculum unit begins with experiences designed to spark interest in the topic. Staff adjust learning experiences around children’s interests, knowledge and skills. Communication and language are explicit priorities in the organisation of learning spaces, giving conversation a purpose within the nursery day.
The EYFS approach here links the early learning curriculum with the spaces children use. Thoresby aims for surroundings that feel natural and calming, encouraging imagination and curiosity. An outdoor learning area serves the early years too, extending the learning environment beyond the classroom.
Character development also runs through the curriculum. Children are encouraged to keep trying and believe they can succeed, placing perseverance alongside the knowledge they learn.
For a parent concerned about development, the first step is a conversation with the class teacher. Parents and staff decide together whether to monitor progress or introduce additional help; the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) can join that discussion where appropriate. This gives families a clear starting point for raising concerns.
Across the school, support is matched to individual needs. Options include language enrichment, speech and language therapy programmes, and activities addressing fine and gross motor skills. These are possible forms of help rather than a fixed package for every child.
Regular progress meetings allow parents to discuss changes and plan subsequent support with the teacher. Families can also request a meeting between those appointments. Before an outside specialist works with a child, the school informs parents, keeping them involved as support develops.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process, coordinated by Hull City Council, and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate task from joining nursery.
Practical preparation is a different matter from admission. For pupils who need additional help with a change of class or setting, transition arrangements can include short classroom visits and a book containing photographs of important people and places. Communication Passports can pass information to new staff. These arrangements support familiarity; they do not secure a place.
