Letters, sounds and early number knowledge gave Wawne’s early years provision a clear educational focus at the July 2022 inspection. This is Wawne Primary School’s own nursery provision, based at the school on Greens Lane in Wawne, Hull. Early years provision was judged Good at the Ofsted inspection on 19 and 20 July 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The school aims to help children become independent learners, with collaboration and consideration for others alongside learning. For parents, that sets an expectation of growing confidence as well as preparation for the next stage.
Early learning includes becoming familiar with letters and their corresponding sounds. In July 2022, nursery children were developing this knowledge before starting Reception phonics. The practical significance is straightforward: children begin making connections between what they see and what they hear, laying foundations for learning to read.
Number understanding is another specific strength of the early years curriculum. In July 2022, children were building secure knowledge of numbers one to 10. This gives early mathematics a concrete focus, with understanding of those first numbers supporting later learning.
EYFS, the early years foundation stage, forms part of the school’s curriculum. Wawne aims to encourage children to reflect on learning and develop independence, while supporting individual needs. Its Foundation learning has also used named topics: pets and vets was a theme in November 2021. That is a past example of a topic giving learning a familiar subject, rather than a description of the current timetable.
Parents have a role in the school’s approach to additional needs. Wawne aims to involve children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), together with their parents or carers, in decisions about support. For a nursery family, this makes participation in planning an explicit part of the school’s intended approach.
A Foundation teaching role also carries SEND coordination responsibilities. The school has teaching assistants alongside its teaching team, although these are school roles rather than a nursery staffing ratio.
For safeguarding concerns, families can contact the school’s safeguarding lead or deputy. Wawne describes an approach that includes supporting families early and working with outside agencies to meet children’s needs. This gives parents a clear route for raising a concern.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the relevant deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as two separate steps.
Preparation for learning is a different matter. At the July 2022 inspection, nursery children’s familiarity with letters and sounds supported their preparation for Reception phonics; that educational preparation did not secure admission.
The school office is the enquiry route: telephone 01482 835599 or email wawne.primary@eastriding.gov.uk. The address is 10 Greens Lane, Wawne, Hull, HU7 5XT.
For families considering additional support, the school’s SEND team can also be contacted through the school. Keep that conversation alongside the nursery enquiry so that your child’s needs are part of planning from the outset.
