Stories, rhymes and learning about feelings give this 26-place nursery its early-years character. Part of St Wilfrid's RC Primary School in Hulme, it sits within a Catholic school whose religious teaching extends to its youngest children. Faith is part of the learning experience, with opportunities for prayer, worship and reflection.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 10 and 11 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Listening and language have a clear place here. In May 2023, the youngest children enjoyed stories and rhymes, while early readers began learning sounds shortly after starting school. The early-years reading programme had a clear sequence, with prompt help for children struggling to keep pace. For parents, that connects the pleasure of hearing stories with the first steps towards reading.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) also includes learning about emotions and individuality. Journey in Love gives the youngest children a focus on being unique and exploring different feelings. This brings personal development into the curriculum alongside early reading.
Nursery's international display for 2025–2026 focused on Bangladesh. It provides a concrete example of nursery contributing to the school's displays. In May 2023, the youngest children also picked up adult instructions and classroom routines quickly, helping them take part in learning with others.
Preparation begins with a Nursery Starter Pack sent to families by post. It covers clothing, items children should bring and their learning, giving parents practical preparation for the start of nursery.
The school's parent partnership policy includes induction meetings for families beginning school, a parents' evening each term and communication by text message and newsletter. These give families several ways to discuss progress and keep track of school information. For children with SEND, the policy includes progress letters, copies of individual education plans and annual reviews for those with an education, health and care plan.
School meal arrangements use Dolce. Parents manage allergen information in their child's account and book meals online by 9am. A booked meal needs cancelling if a child is ill to avoid a charge. Families can choose a packed lunch or school dinner day by day.
Separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Nursery enquiries can go to the school office at admin@st-wilfrids-pri.manchester.sch.uk or 0161 226 3339. The Nursery Starter Pack includes guidance on uniform; the school-wide policy requires red tops, dark trousers or skirts and plain black footwear.
Breakfast care. The school's breakfast club accepts children from Reception upwards. It therefore does not provide a nursery breakfast-care option.
