Language, early reading and learning to play together give Uphall’s nursery its character. Children join in the academic year of their fourth birthday, becoming part of the early years provision at Uphall Primary School on Uphall Road, Ilford. Morning and afternoon sessions give the day its basic shape.
At the February 2025 Ofsted inspection, early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The early years findings give families useful detail: children developed cooperative play, while those learning English as an additional language settled readily, including children arriving during the year.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises learning around seven areas. Uphall’s explanation puts movement, communication and personal, social and emotional development among the foundations for other learning. For parents, this means learning involves how children communicate and interact with others as well as acquiring knowledge.
Letters and sounds sits alongside Read Write Inc in the early years approach. Speaking, listening and recognising sounds are part of that work, alongside combining sounds aloud and separating words into sounds. These are the building blocks for reading and spelling. In February 2025, daily early years phonics teaching gave children a secure beginning in reading.
Outdoor time is woven through the session. Nursery children go outside at different points rather than following a fixed morning or afternoon break. The nursery also has its own named Nursery Gate for session drop-off and collection, making its daily arrangements distinct from those of older pupils.
Settling begins with contact between the family and staff. After a nursery place is offered, parents are invited to an admission interview, meet the team and have an opportunity to look around. The school also aims to arrange a home visit. This gives staff a chance to meet the child in familiar surroundings.
Medical conditions and special educational needs are discussed at the initial meeting so that support and procedures can be planned. The nursery is adapted for disabled users, although wheelchair access does not extend throughout the school. Families with mobility needs should weigh that distinction carefully.
Across the school, teachers receive training and support from a qualified SENDCo. Parents seeking additional support can email their child’s class mailbox, with follow-up from the Inclusion Team. That provides a clear communication route for raising concerns about a child’s needs.
A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Uphall’s Reception. Families must make a separate application through Redbridge’s online e-admissions route. The school gives an application window from 1 September to 15 January before the child starts school.
Allocation is handled by the local authority using its admissions criteria. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself; families still need to complete the Reception application on time.
The morning session runs from 8.40am to 11.40am. Afternoon drop-off is at 12.30pm. Afternoon collection. The timetable gives 3.30pm, while the accompanying text gives 3.40pm. Those conflicting times matter when planning collection.
