At a Glance

An enclosed garden, a quiet snug and weekly Forest School visits give Hedgehog Nursery a character of its own within Gorseland Primary School. This governor-led provision in Martlesham Heath caters for three- and four-year-olds, with children able to move between outdoor and indoor play as their interests develop.

The classroom has its own kitchen and toilets, keeping everyday care facilities within the nursery space. In December 2025, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years across the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.

The Nursery Day

Play shapes the learning here. Children choose from resources arranged in distinct areas, while practitioners support their investigations and ideas. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning approach connects exploration with developing concentration and solving problems: children ask questions, try things out and work towards their own answers.

The Characteristics of Effective Learning give this approach its structure. Exploring through the senses, staying involved in an activity and thinking creatively all count as learning. Short daily introductions to maths and phonics add adult-led teaching, with activities matched to children's developmental stage.

Weekly visits extend the day beyond the nursery classroom. Forest School provides time in the school's forest area; library sessions bring access to books; PE takes children into the large hall. The enclosed garden also makes outdoor play part of ordinary nursery life, rather than something reserved for a special outing.

In December 2025, early years teaching placed clear emphasis on conversation and vocabulary. Stories and pretend play supported language, while activities inside and outside helped physical development. Staff adjusted learning when children needed extra help, including a drawing club to encourage early mark making. Repeated encounters with familiar learning helped children deepen their understanding.

Care and Support

Settling can happen gradually. Parents are encouraged to visit with their child before starting and can stay during the first session or two when needed. Some children begin with shorter periods and build towards a complete session. Toilet training is not a condition of joining.

Quick conversations at collection and drop-off sit alongside a family meeting each term. Tapestry records children's learning online, giving parents another way to follow their progress. For children with special educational needs or disabilities, families can discuss adjustments before admission so that support can be planned around the individual child.

Lunch offers a choice between a hot dish, sandwiches and a jacket potato, or a packed lunch from home. Vegetarian meals and allergy requirements can be accommodated; families should record allergies on the registration form. The snug provides a quieter space within the classroom.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Gorseland or another primary school. Families must make a separate Reception application through Suffolk County Council's school-place process and meet the deadline for their application year. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the child's nursery experience, with the later school application treated separately.

Once school places have been allocated, transition support for children with SEND can include a visit from the SENCo to their preschool setting, discussions with specialists and additional visits when needed. These arrangements help staff prepare for the child; they do not confer an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Drop-off begins at 8.30am, with children expected by 9am for registration. Hedgehog Nursery also offers wraparound care from 7.30am to 6pm, extending the options for families whose working day runs beyond nursery hours. Funded places go first to eligible four-year-olds, followed by eligible three-year-olds.

Uniform is optional. Hedgehog Nursery T-shirts are available, while named spare clothes, a water bottle and weather-appropriate clothing support the practical business of play. Forest School requires wellies and waterproof clothing kept at school. Contact nursery@gorseland.net for nursery enquiries; tours can be booked. Ask the school for current charges.
