Nursery at Hillside Primary School

At a Glance

A garden for bigger movements, Numberblocks for early maths and stories ranging from poems to traditional tales give Hillside’s nursery its character. Play has a clear learning purpose here. The provision serves children aged 3 to 4 within Hillside Primary School on Belstead Avenue in Ipswich, operating under the school’s registration.

In June 2026, Ofsted judged early years to meet the Expected standard. This judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than giving the nursery a separate rating.

The Nursery Day

Children combine play they choose themselves with adult-led group learning on the carpet. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together: communication, movement and social development sit alongside early literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning involves how children talk, move and get along as well as what they know.

The classroom’s ongoing play provision changes as children develop, with additional activities shaped around their interests and learning needs. Outside, the garden extends the classroom and gives children room to explore through larger movements. Children can make choices in their play and explore larger movements in the garden.

Books introduce nursery children to poetry and traditional tales. Early maths draws on Numberblocks, NCETM and Development Matters, while Read Write Inc begins in the summer term of nursery. Before that, children practise listening and telling sounds apart. This gives the early reading work a preparatory stage rather than starting immediately with formal phonics.

In June 2026, early years activities included building, imaginative role play and water exploration, alongside work on forming letters and strengthening hands. Songs and familiar stories also featured. Adults helped children share materials and wait for their turn, making social learning part of these activities. Checks on children’s learning informed what came next.

Care and Support

Relationships help children settle. In June 2026, children became familiar with routines quickly and participated positively in early years activities; caring relationships supported feelings of security and belonging. Home visits, family workshops and conversations about learning gave parents several ways to stay involved. Information from home also contributes to planning children’s next steps, so family knowledge has a practical role in their learning.

Language support needs closer attention. Although staff used different ways to help children develop language, chances to stretch their vocabulary and understanding were sometimes lost. Improving adult conversations to develop communication and thinking was an explicit early years priority in June 2026. For families, this is a useful focus when discussing their child’s progress.

The school’s SENDCo helps families with referrals and identifying suitable support. A Pastoral Team can also arrange family support appointments and refer to other agencies where appropriate, giving parents a route for concerns extending beyond classroom learning.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a place in Hillside’s Reception. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions, even though the nursery operates within the school.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am, with morning-only provision. That finish time is a decisive consideration for families arranging childcare around work. The nursery offers 15 hours of free childcare for children aged 3 and 4 from working families; eligibility is a condition of that offer.

Applications go directly to the school. Parents can telephone 01473 601402, email office@hillsideprimary.co.uk or apply through the school office in person. Visits are welcomed for families considering a place. The school is on Belstead Avenue, Ipswich, IP2 8NU.
