Nursery at Ravenswood Community Primary School

Play, conversation and growing independence shape the early-years approach at Ravenswood Community Primary School. Its nursery belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with morning and afternoon sessions giving families two distinct parts of the day to plan around. The school is on Ravenswood Avenue in Ipswich.
Hands-on activities and creative play are the nursery’s starting points. Within the EYFS, Ravenswood aims to develop children’s communication, friendships and ability to manage emotions, alongside the confidence to explore independently. In parent language, this means learning involves interacting and playing, with personal development forming part of the curriculum.
Outdoor learning is being developed across the school. The approach encourages children to investigate their surroundings, discuss questions and work out solutions under adult supervision. Ravenswood has a school meadow, although the nursery’s learning approach should be distinguished from activities undertaken by older classes. The emphasis on exploration gives families a useful picture of the school’s wider approach to learning beyond the classroom.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), support follows a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review. Support Plans bring together a child’s views, adjustments and short-term goals; reviews take place three times a year, with parents involved. This creates opportunities to reconsider help as a child’s needs change.
School-wide adaptations include visual timetables, extra thinking time and changes to resources or staffing. The school also accesses Speech and Language Therapy Services (SALT). These are support options matched to need, rather than activities every nursery child receives.
The wider school building has a lift and four accessible toilets. Its pastoral team includes a trained Thrive Practitioner, a Learning Mentor and a Learning Behaviour Lead. Families can also receive help with an Early Help referral. Additional adult support. Resources for support beyond standard provision are limited, and an EHC plan does not automatically bring one-to-one adult support. Families should factor that qualification into their expectations.
Attending Ravenswood’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. For September 2026 entry, applications were handled by Suffolk County Council, with an online application route and a paper alternative.
Transition support for children with SEND can include staff discussions, information sharing, social stories, transition books and induction sessions. These measures help prepare a child for change; they are separate from securing admission.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoon nursery runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Each has its own start and collection time, so families can assess how the timetable fits their daily arrangements.
Nursery applications go directly to the school: completed paper forms can be emailed to ravenswoodinfo@ekotrust.org.uk or delivered to the office. Regular prospective-parent tours can be arranged through the same email address.
Children may wear the school uniform or the nursery alternative of black leggings or joggers, a white T-shirt and a jade jumper. Clothing should be labelled. Preloved uniform is offered near the main office, with some also kept in the Ravenswood Community Sharing Hub.
