At a Glance

Bear hunts, den building and a book to start each week give Little Lions its character. Sprites Primary Academy’s nursery caters for children aged three and four, with 26 AM or PM part-time places or 30-hour places. It is part of the school on Stonechat Road in Ipswich, with access to the school library and Forest school area. Those shared spaces extend children’s learning beyond the nursery itself.

At the November 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good and found that children quickly developed independence and enthusiasm for learning. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Stories provide a starting point rather than filling the whole session. Each week begins with a book, followed by related activities. Children join in with familiar tales, retell them and explore information from non-fiction through conversation, play and marks on paper. That gives them several ways to express what they understand.

Long stretches of uninterrupted play let children pursue ideas and finish projects they have chosen. Adults join the play, respond to children’s interests and adjust learning as it happens. The balance matters: children direct their activity while adults help them take another step.

A brief group activity each morning brings children together for focused learning, sometimes using resources to illustrate a concept. Listening and sustaining attention are part of the purpose. Stories and rhymes bring everyone together again as the session closes. In practical terms, early years learning here combines conversation, independent exploration and time learning alongside others.

Outdoors, the Forest school area provides opportunities to investigate nature, build shelters and follow imaginary bears. The library adds another place to read with friends. Communication also runs through everyday play: children practise sharing, waiting for a turn and working through disagreements with one another.

Care and Support

Relationships begin with adults listening to children and using their interests to shape activities. The nursery aims to develop confidence, resilience and independence through this approach, giving children a voice in what they explore.

Once a place becomes available, families are invited to meet the nursery team with their child. An induction programme is discussed during that visit, providing a chance to prepare for the start together.

For developmental concerns, the school’s first contact is the class teacher, who can request advice or support from the SENDCo. The school’s SENDCo holds the National Award for SEND Co-ordination and is a qualified teacher. Children on the SEND register have a Map to Success covering their targets and provision, with parents invited to review these each term. This gives families a regular opportunity to discuss progress and agree next steps.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through Suffolk County Council’s admissions team; joining Little Lions should therefore be treated as a nursery choice rather than a secured school place.

Transition support is a separate matter. Children due to start Reception visit the classroom and meet staff beforehand. Where special educational needs have already been identified, the SENCo also visits the child’s preschool setting. These arrangements help staff prepare for the child’s needs and help the child become familiar with the next setting.

Practical Information

Nursery provision operates between 9:00am and 3:30pm, Monday to Friday. The options are AM or PM part-time places and 30-hour places. These are booking options within that operating window, rather than identical attendance patterns.

Eligibility begins in the term following a child’s third birthday. To join the waiting list, visit the school office. Families can also contact the office to arrange a nursery visit; initial enquiries go through the office administrators on 01473 685040.
