At a Glance

A two-hour Forest School session each week gives Clervaux’s nursery education a distinctive outdoor rhythm. The wooded area surrounds the building, putting wildlife, den-making and campfire cooking within the children’s learning space. Nature is part of the curriculum here.

Clervaux Nursery School on Clervaux Terrace in Jarrow provides local authority nursery education for children aged two to five. This is a nursery school in its own right. Alongside its main provision, it has a nurture classroom for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

The Nursery Day

High Scope is the named approach, with an emphasis on children’s independence, confidence and creative thinking. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) areas bring together learning to communicate, move, manage feelings, explore numbers and develop reading and writing interests. Art, imaginative play and investigating the world also have their place.

An October 2022 account of Red Group gives the day a recognisable shape: selecting a special helper, counting the group, preparing milk for friends, choosing play and putting equipment away. The home corner and outdoor space provide different places to pursue those choices. Everyday jobs become opportunities to practise counting and responsibility.

More recent examples show how stories become physical experiences. In March 2025, Daisy room children used bricks to create houses for the Three Little Pigs, balanced across stepping stones and made sounds with pans. A Bear Hunt activity combined story props with a trail of grass, mud and water. Children also explored foods including raisins and chocolate custard at a tasting table, connecting the story with sensory exploration.

Forest School adds a different scale of challenge. Children investigate seasonal changes, handle tools and construct dens; campfire activities begin only after children demonstrate their understanding of the safety rules. Sessions continue through changing weather, with strong winds the exception. Families can also join Forest School sessions, giving parents a shared experience to discuss at home.

Care and Support

Home visits for new starters establish contact before children begin attending. Parents can also share experiences from home through Tapestry, while Forest School family sessions offer another connection between nursery and family life.

Language support has named programmes behind it. The 2025/26 Early Years Pupil Premium provision includes an additional staff member supporting confidence, self-help and independence. Staff training includes Talk Boost and BLAST, and children entering the three-to-four-year-old provision receive ECAT screening. These are concrete ways of identifying and addressing communication needs.

Teaching assistants and teachers work within a team that includes a SENCO, safeguarding leads and a Forest School lead who also holds the first-aid lead role. Ofsted’s June 2023 inspection found that staff adapted learning for children needing extra help, sought specialist professional support and maintained effective safeguarding. Its nursery findings also described daily early-reading sessions, reading spaces throughout the provision and books children could share at home.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Choosing Clervaux’s nursery education and securing a place at a primary school are separate decisions.

Practical Information

Opening hours are 8.45am to 3.15pm, with the SEN Unit running from 9am to 3.30pm. Kids Club provides breakfast and after-school care for nursery-aged children, extending the practical options around the nursery day.

Uniform is optional. Families can order it through the office, and nearly new items are kept in the entrance and parents’ shelter; a donation is welcome but not required. For Forest School, the nursery supplies splash suits or snow suits. Children usually bring wellies and need spare clothes for muddy activities.

For enquiries, use the contact form or telephone 0191 489 7358. The School Calendar page directs families to South Tyneside’s school calendar.
