On the south bank of the River Tyne in Tyne and Wear, Jarrow sits five miles east of Newcastle upon Tyne, its northern edge marked by the southern portal of the Tyne Tunnel. The town's history spans more than thirteen centuries: St Paul's Monastery was home to the Venerable Bede in the eighth century, and industrial Jarrow became a centre for shipbuilding from the mid-nineteenth century until 1935, when the Jarrow March drew national attention to mass unemployment. Today around 29,000 people live here.
The Tyne and Wear Metro links Jarrow to Newcastle city centre in around twenty-five minutes. Jarrow draws families from across South Tyneside competing for primary places, with Hedworth and Primrose among the most sought-after pockets for school catchments.
