Nursery at Rothwell Victoria Infant School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Play leads the learning here, with outdoor exploration in all weathers and a weekly forest school session on the main school site. Rothwell Victoria Infant School Nursery has a teacher-led team and room for up to 39 children. Its aim is to help children become curious, independent learners, with friendships and enjoyment central to that ambition.

Children normally start in the September following their third birthday. Earlier starts during the year depend on vacancies. The nursery belongs to the Rothwell Schools partnership, but its character rests on the balance between short group activities and time for children to pursue their own play.

The Nursery Day

Short adult-led sessions introduce phonics, maths, rhyme time and T4W. Alongside these, children spend substantial time learning through play, choosing from the activities and resources around them. This gives the day two distinct rhythms: shared learning with an adult alongside opportunities to explore ideas more independently.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum takes practical form through talking, investigating and working alongside other children. Planning begins with children's interests and needs; the team considers their next learning steps when choosing activities. The nursery aims to encourage children to explain their thinking and collaborate, rather than simply complete a task.

Outdoor learning extends beyond fine-weather play. Children can use the outdoor area whatever the weather, while the weekly forest school session brings them onto another part of the school site. The nursery intends these spaces to encourage independence, curiosity and willingness to try challenges.

In April 2025, Ofsted found nursery children absorbed in a shared experiment, using a water chute to move a ball, and listening attentively to stories. These examples show concentration in both practical play and group listening. The same inspection identified a concern across the school: some writing activities demanded skills pupils had yet to secure, while some pupils' irregular attendance interrupted learning. Those findings concern the school more broadly and should not be read as nursery-only judgements.

Care and Support

Parent Chats combine a chance for the child to play in the nursery with a meeting involving their key person and the wider team. That makes the conversation about starting nursery practical as well as personal. Evidence Me keeps families involved afterwards: staff share selected learning moments, and parents can reply with photographs and comments from home.

Toilet training receives support, with staff working alongside families to develop independence. Children who use nappies need their own supplies, including wipes and nappy sacks. Prescribed medicines, including inhalers, require a completed parental consent form before staff can administer them. Families hear about injuries through a text or a conversation at collection.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the schools' shared team offers termly discussions with parents and involvement in Individual Education Plan targets. One Page Profiles also capture the child's perspective. These arrangements give families recurring opportunities to discuss progress and help shape support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or give admission priority. Families must make a separate online application through North Northamptonshire Council. The deadline falls in January; check the council's exact date for the relevant application year.

The nursery aims to ease the move into school through its teacher-led provision and shared ethos. That educational continuity is separate from allocation of a Reception place. Keep the application deadline in view even when your child is already settled here.

Practical Information

The nursery application offers a morning preference of 9am to noon or a longer day of 9am to 3pm. A family's preferred session is not guaranteed when places are allocated. Applications go directly to the nursery, and personal tours can be arranged with the school office throughout the year.

Uniform is optional. Comfortable clothes should allow children to manage toileting independently; trainers are suitable, while sandals, Crocs and open-toed shoes are excluded. Bring a labelled drawstring bag with spare clothing rather than a rucksack. Collection must be prompt and by an adult aged at least 18, with current emergency contact details held by the office.

FAQs

No. Attendance does not guarantee a place or confer priority. A separate online application is required through North Northamptonshire Council, with a January deadline. Check the exact date for your application year.
