Play, seasonal change and regular Wild Tribe sessions give Sunbeams its character. North Petherwin School’s nursery provides education for children aged 2-5 and sits within Class 1, alongside Rainbows Reception. It is part of the school’s early years provision, with a Sunbeams teacher who also leads the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), supported by EYFS assistants.
The school places personal, social and emotional development first: confidence and relationships are part of learning, rather than an extra activity.
Children follow the EYFS curriculum, with learning built around their interests and what they already know. In parent language, the emphasis is on exploring through play, trying ideas and thinking about what happens. Adults use children’s curiosity to shape activities while keeping curriculum goals in view. That gives play a purpose.
North Petherwin’s early years curriculum draws on the seasons and surrounding nature. Regular Wild Tribe sessions, visits and trips are part of North Petherwin’s early years approach. The school aims to help children compare their surroundings with places and cultures elsewhere, connecting familiar experiences with a bigger world. Learning takes place indoors and outdoors.
Books also have a place in the day. In May 2023, early years children had a class book selected each week, giving them a shared focus for stories. At that time, children played together, waited for turns and learned in calm surroundings. These are practical foundations for group learning: listening, sharing an activity and allowing someone else a turn.
Established routines and close relationships with staff characterised the early years in May 2023. For young children, that combination matters as much as the activity itself: familiar adults and a predictable pattern can help make the day easier to understand.
For children starting school life, the school aims to support both parents and children through the change. Families are encouraged to visit, meet staff and talk through questions before joining.
Additional needs are supported through the school’s SEND coordinator. Where necessary, the school works with health services, social services or the local authority; the coordinator also leads the Early Help Assessment process. This gives families a route for discussing support that may involve more than the classroom team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Cornwall Council, using its online application facility or a Local Authority Admission Form. Treat that application as a separate step from choosing nursery, and submit it by the normal deadline.
Sunbeams Nursery and Rainbows Reception belong to Class 1. That places the two stages within the same class structure, but it should not be read as an admissions advantage.
For nursery enquiries, contact North Petherwin on 01566 785886 or email northpetherwin@andaras.org. A school tour offers a chance to meet the team and discuss starting nursery. The invitation includes time for staff to answer parents’ questions, making it a useful first step before choosing the provision.
