Play, conversation and learning to manage feelings give Werrington's nursery its direction. Sunbeams Nursery forms part of Class 1 alongside Rainbows Reception, placing the nursery within the school's early years provision. Nursery education caters for children aged 2 to 5. The school aims to help children become confident learners, with personal, social and emotional development guiding its early years approach.
Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the curriculum organising their early learning and development. At Werrington, experiences chosen by children sit alongside activities directed by adults. Children's existing understanding and interests help shape the learning, giving their curiosity a practical role in what happens next.
Exploration, active involvement and creative thinking are the learning habits the school aims to develop. Children have opportunities to practise independently as well as with guidance. Open-ended activities allow them to make decisions and use what they already know; adults use everyday assessment to identify the next steps. For parents, the important distinction is that activities are intended to respond to individual development rather than require every child to progress identically.
The nursery curriculum for 2025-2026 included concrete examples of this approach. Younger children explored paint with brushes and fingers, while older children developed stories around miniature play equipment. Construction blocks and model-making materials gave ideas a physical form. Musical learning included experimenting with sound and singing, connecting creative expression with listening and participation. These were plans for that academic year, rather than a timetable for the current one.
An EYFS lead, deputy and assistant form the early years team. This gives the provision a defined staffing structure within the school, alongside the SEND coordinator who coordinates the Early Help Assessment process.
The school aims to support children's independence, emotional development and social learning as well as their progress in learning. Where a child's needs require it, the school works with professionals from local authority services, health or social services. Early Help Assessment provides a way to coordinate that involvement, so support can extend beyond the classroom.
Starting nursery is treated as a change for parents as well as children. The school offers support with that start and encourages families to tour the school and meet staff. That provides an opportunity to discuss the move into nursery before it begins.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Cornwall Council's normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Applications can be made online through Cornwall Council or using a Local Authority Admission Form. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.
For nursery enquiries, contact Werrington on 01566 772943 or email werrington@andaras.org. Families are encouraged to arrange a school tour and meet the staff, giving them a direct introduction to the people supporting the start of school life.
